Our Mission Since 1971, the Hampton‑Newport News Community Services Board has provided a comprehensive continuum of high‑quality, essential, and community‑based services to citizens of the Peninsula who are living with a mental illness, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders.

Your day‑to‑day as a Peer Recovery Specialist You will provide peer support and advocate for individuals navigating their recovery journey. Responsibilities include assisting people with physical, financial, social, and personal needs, promoting community living, monitoring mental status, linking clients to essential services, and offering daily living support. Your background as a consumer of mental health and/or substance use services will help you build supportive, trusting relationships. Strong communication skills and a deep understanding of the mental health system are essential for helping others develop independence in a fast‑paced environment.

What You Need To Be Successful Applicants must have experienced a mental health and/or substance use condition and achieved a minimum of 12 months of successful recovery. Successful completion of the DBHDS 72‑hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training within six months of hire is mandatory for the Peer Recovery Specialist I role. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills, the ability to foster trusting relationships, and competence in utilizing community resources. Self‑motivation, autonomous decision‑making, and a commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth are also required.
