PUBLIC NOTICE- DEA Criminal Investigators Apply for the PUBLIC NOTICE- DEA Criminal Investigators role at Drug Enforcement Administration.

Summary This is a public notice for DEA Criminal Investigator GL‑1811‑7/9/11 positions open to U.S. Citizens. A job announcement will be posted on USAJobs on January 12th and April 6th, 2026.

Duties

Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities

Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and oef deliver briefings for senior personnel and other Federal, state, and local agencies

Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities

Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means

Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries

Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.

Basic Agent Training

Applicants who have not completed previous federal law‑enforcement training through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program.

Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship required.

Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.

Must sign a mobility agreement for relocation to any location as DEA needs require.

This position requires pre‑employment medical clearance and annual examination.

Full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph required; reciprocity may apply for 1811 applicants.

Selective Service registration or exemption required for males born after December 31, 1959.

Mandatory 1–2‑year trial period to evaluate fitness.

Valid state driver’s license required.

Subject to random drug testing.

Basic Agent Training (16–20 weeks) at DEA Training Academy, Quantico, Virginia.

Qualifications Applicants must meet all required qualification requirements described below by the closing of this announcement. If qualifying based on education, submit a copy of your transcript with your application.

For the GL‑07 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL ומ/GS‑05 level.

Experience includes assisting in investigations of alleged violations, writing reports, researching and analyzing data, etc.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE

One year of graduate‑level education may substitute experience.

SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (SAA)

Applicants who completed a bachelor’s degree with SAA may qualify based on GPA, class standing, or honor society membership.

Senior students expected to graduate within 9 months are considered for GL‑7 based on grades; must maintain required grades.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A combination of education and experience may be used; compute percentage as described.

For the GL‑09 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL או/GS‑07 level, including investigations, data analysis, report writing, court interactions, etc.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GL‑09

Master’s degree or 2‑year graduate education; LL.B. or J.D.; or optional.

For the GS‑11 Level

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GL/GS‑09, demonstrating abilities in investigations, operational planning, undercover operations, source elicitation, interviewing, evidence organization, etc.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS‑11Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; 3‑year progressive graduate education; etc.

Education

Accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized institution.

Foreign education may be used if comparable; evidence required.

Pass/fail coursework: More than 10% on pass/fail requires other criteria.

Graduate education: one year considered 18 semester hours.

Appointments

Appointments under 5 CFR 213.3210 (Schedule B), Except ನನ. May convert to Career after 3–4 years.

Probationary/Trial Period Law Enforcement Availability

Includes overtime, irregular work, weekend/holiday; availability pay 25% of salary.

Medical Requirements

Requires moderate to arduous physical exertion; pre‑employment medical exam; disqualifying conditions.

Firearms Requirement

Authorized to carry a firearm and maintain proficiency; subject to Lautenberg Amendment; no misdemeanor domestic violence.

Employment Drug Policy

Must disclose past drug usage; assessment on case‑by‑case basis.

Mobility Agreement

Reassignment to any domestic DEA facility; mobility agreement required.

Relocation Expenses

Full relocation for federal transfers; new employees subject to limited expenses.

Benefits Federal employees receive a comprehensive benefits package; eligibility depends on position type.
