Position Overview Biodiversity Research ডিজেকটরিটেরী (BRI) seeks a conscientious and detail-oriented science writer and communications specialist for our non‑profit organization located in Portland, Maine. We are a scientific nonprofit group dedicated to environmental research and monitoring that supports the protection of biodiversity and ecological health. BRI’s mission is to assess emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research, and to use scientific findings to advance environmental awareness and inform decision makers. Successful candidates must possess a genuine interest in supporting BRI’s mission and a strong desire to be part of a dynamic and purpose‑driven work environment.

The Science Writer and Communications Specialist will be based within BRI’s Center for Research on Offshore Wind and the Environment (CROWE) and work primarily on projects related to offshore wind energy progreso, including science communications, stakeholder engagement, and publication initiatives of the Offshore Wind Environmental Technical Working Group (E‑TWG; https://www.nyetwg.com/). The position may also supportinesi BRI’s work associated with several United Nations Conventions (including the Minamata Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity) and other projects related to conservation at local, regional, and international levels. Additional focus areas will depend on the candidate’s specific skills.

Position Responsibilities

Provide scientific, technical, writing, and communications support for stakeholder engagement activities involving state and federal agencies, industry representatives, international groups, and others to address environmental issues related to offshore wind energy development and other wildlife conservation topics;

Work collaboratively with BRI scientists and external partners to manage and coordinate research and stakeholder engagement projects;

Oversee junior staff and manage progress toward objectives and products related to stakeholder priorities and science priorities of the E‑TWG;

Develop public‑facing website content, fact sheets, FAQs, briefing documents, talking points, and other communications and outreach materials;

Develop scientific manuscripts, presentations, and reports;

Support grant writing and reporting, ensuring proposal and Socks narratives are compelling and articulate; and

Other duties as directed or assigned, depending on applicant’s areas of expertise and communications, writing, and analytical needs across the organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required The successful candidate should be detail‑oriented and have traje track record of excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Essential qualifications include:

Master’s or PhD in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, marine science, conservation, or a related field, with substantial experience in avian ecology and/or marine systems

Advanced training in scientific communications, decision‑science, and/or expert elicitation processes

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including a proven track record of scientific writing as well as the ability to distill science and policy information into effective communications for general audiences

Excellent organizational and logistics skills, including group management and organization of stakeholder meetings and events

Ability to work effectively and inclusively as part of a team, and willingness to work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders

Strong work ethic and proven success with managing multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and accurately with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively

Willingness to be flexible and adaptive.

Other preferred qualifications include familiarity with offshore wind and wildlife‑related issues in the U.S.; experience working with offshore wind energy stakeholders including environmental nonprofits, offshore wind developers, state and federal regulators, fisheries, and others; and experience using a range of applications to facilitate collaborative work and efficiently produce science products (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Slack, Zotero).
