Job Description Senior Technical Designer

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia – role is onsite, no remote option

Key Responsibilities

Lead the end-to-end technical development process for assigned categories, from initial design handoff through final production approval.

Conduct and direct fit sessions on live models and/or dress forms; diagnose fit, balance, and construction issues and provide clear corrective actions.

Create and maintain precise technical packages, including measurements, construction details, grading, and BOM information.

Develop, adjust, and finalize 2D patterns using industry-standard patternmaking software, ensuring both fit excellence and production efficiency.

Establish, refine, and maintain fit blocks and standards across genders, size ranges, and product categories for a cohesive brand fit identity.

Partner with Design to interpret concepts into production-ready product while preserving design intent, performance and comfort.

Collaborate with Production and Sourcing to evaluate proto, SMS, and PPS samples, resolve technical issues, and secure timely approvals.

Analyze feedback from wear tests, customer returns and quality reviews to drive continuous improvement in fit, durability and construction.

Own the accuracy and integrity of all technical data in PLM, including specs, comments and revision history.

Participate in fabric and trim selection discussions to validate suitability for construction methods, performance needs and end use.

Manage multiple styles and seasons simultaneously, upholding calendar deadlines in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

Serve as a technical leader and mentor, supporting junior team members and helping optimize cross-functional workflows and communication.

Must-Have Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in apparel design, textile science or a related discipline.

8+ years of experience in technical design or product development within the apparel industry.

Advanced understanding of fit, patternmaking, grading garment construction and manufacturing methods.

Proficiency in 2D patternmaking software (e.g., Optitex, Gerber, Clo or Browzwear), Adobe Illustrator, PLM platforms and Excel.

Proven ability to independently lead fit sessions and provide concise actionable feedback to internal partners and overseas vendors.

Exceptional attention to detail with strong organizational written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated success managing multiple projects categories and changing priorities under tight timelines.

A collaborative hands-on mindset with a willingness to own tasks at both strategic and tactical levels.

Preferred Experience

Experience with 3D design or patternmaking tools (Clo or Browzwear strongly preferred).

Background working across a range of product types such as woven bottoms knits outerwear and sweaters.

Experience supporting multiple end uses and demographics men’s women’s youth toddler.

History of mentoring junior technical designers and contributing to process improvements.

Passion for premium performance product and interest in emerging technologies in fit materials and construction.
