Rugby Architectural Building Products
is a wholesale distributor of specialty building products, operating out of 26 branches throughout the United States. Our primary business is non-structural architectural grade building products sold principally to customers who create and produce end-products for the commercial, industrial, retail, residential and institutional markets. (In New Century, KS, Lebanon, TN, and Rockford, IL – we do business as: Olathe Millworks, Warren Brother Sash & Door, River City Millworks respectfully.)
We are
seeking an experienced Specification Representative
to grow pull-through demand across commercial and residential markets. This role is ideal for a seasoned spec professional with a strong design sensibility, deep knowledge of decorative and architectural surfacing, and established relationships within the local A&D community.
You will serve as a key design resource—partnering with architects, designers, and specifiers to guide material selection and ensure Rugby products are specified early and often. This is a hybrid role, combining time at the local branch, remote flexibility, and significant in-territory travel.
Duties and Responsibilities
In this design-driven specification role, you will:
Act as the primary design and specification expert for Rugby’s architectural and decorative product portfolio within your territory.
Promote and influence the specification of decorative surfacing and architectural building products to architects, interior designers, and design-focused firms.
Leverage existing relationships and contacts within the A&D community to drive immediate and long-term specification opportunities.
Build new, trusted partnerships with key design decision-makers, becoming a go-to resource for material selection and technical guidance.
Collaborate closely with design teams to understand aesthetic intent, performance requirements, and project constraints—delivering tailored product solutions.
Prepare and manage detailed specifications, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and seamless integration into construction documents.
Develop and deliver polished design-forward presentations, CEU sessions, and technical demonstrations that resonate with design professionals.
Conduct jobsite visits, design studio meetings, and product showings to support projects from concept through completion.
Stay informed on design trends, finishes, textures, and innovations in decorative and non-structural architectural surfacing.
Share market insights, competitive intelligence, and design feedback with internal teams to support product development and growth strategies.
Qualifications and Required Traits
You’ll thrive in this role if you have:
Proven experience as a Specification Representative, preferably within decorative surfacing, architectural materials, or related design-driven product categories.
An established network of architectural and design contacts within the territory, with the ability to open doors and influence specifications quickly.
A background or education in architecture, interior design, construction management, or a related field (degree or equivalent experience).
A strong understanding of the specification process, construction documentation, and how design decisions translate to installed products.
Exceptional presentation and communication skills, with confidence presenting to both small design studios and large firms.
A consultative, relationship-first approach with a passion for design and material innovation.
The ability to work independently while managing a territory, prioritizing opportunities, and driving measurable results.
Willingness to travel regularly throughout the local market for design meetings, jobsite visits, trade shows, and industry events.
