Overview
We are seeking a full-time
Aviation Technical Writer 2
in our Salem, OR location. In this role, you will be responsible for creating reader-friendly technical publications, user guides and installation and maintenance manuals.
Essential Functions
Research and collect data to write pilots’ guides, quick reference guides, installation manuals, maintenance manuals, and/or service documents
Create electronic documents and desktop publishing tools, adhering to Garmin's internal writing style standards
Communicate with the Design Engineers regarding product specifications/development
Research airframe technical characteristics to accurately document functions and features of specific aviation products
Provide software beta testing input for Design Engineers, Program Managers, and Human Factors team
Facilitate the rework of mechanical drawings and screen captures
Work in a team environment within the Technical Publications area to constantly improve the archival, storage and documentation process
Edit copy for content organization, style, voice, audience and format consistency
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, or another related technical writing field
AND
a minimum of 2 years of technical writing experience
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Experience writing user guides for software products and user interfaces, ideally within the aviation industry
Familiar with aviation phraseology and flight operations procedures
Proficient in desktop publishing tools understanding the fundamentals of lean writing and the need for writing style standards
Basic understanding S1000D documentation standards
Must be detail-oriented, possess the ability to work proactively/effectively with minimal supervision, and is able to prioritize/multi-task in a flexible, fast paced and challenging environment
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others
Desired Qualifications
Avionics and/or electronics/technical background
Pilot License or A&P and IA Certificate
The ability to read and understand electrical schematics would be a nice to have
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Experience (InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator) & AutoCAD
Experience and/or education in computer graphics creation relevant to Garmin’s business needs
