SCHEDULE The general work schedule is outlined below and may vary based on event, program, and facility needs:

Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Wednesday: 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Friday: 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (schedule may change based on party and event availability)

Saturday: Between 1:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (hours determined by scheduled events)

Additional hours may be available based on special events, facility rentals, trips, and program needs, including evenings and weekends.

POSITION SUMMARY The Seasonal Community Maintenance Assistant (Custodial & Van Driver) is responsible for supporting the safe, clean, and efficient operation of City of Evanston recreation and cultural facilities, with primary assignments at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center and Gibbs Morrison Cultural Center. This position combines facility custodial services, event support cleaning, and participant transportation. The employee ensures buildings are clean, safe, and program‑ready while also safely transporting program participants, staff, supplies, and equipment for City programs, camps, special events, field trips, and senior activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Custodial, Facility & Event Support

Performs general custodial cleaning of community and cultural facilities, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, trash removal, and disinfecting high‑touch surfaces.

Provides pre‑event, during‑event, and post‑event cleaning support for programs, rentals, performances, meetings, and special events.

Cleans and restocks restrooms, including sinks, toilets, floors, and dispensers.

Sets up and breaks down tables, chairs, stages, and recreational or event equipment.

Maintains floors (vinyl, hardwood, and carpet) including routine cleaning and care.

Assists with opening and closing buildings, securing doors and windows per City procedures.

Monitors facility conditions and reports safety hazards, maintenance needs, or vandalism.

Removes litter, debris, and snow from entrances, sidewalks, and walkways as needed.

Maintains custodial supplies and equipment according to MSDS and safety standards.

Operates City‑owned or rental vans safely and responsibly.

Transports youth, adults, seniors, staff, supplies, and program equipment to designated locations.

Assists participants with entering and exiting vehicles, ensuring all safety procedures are followed.

Conducts daily pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections and reports maintenance concerns.

Maintains a clean, organized, and safe vehicle interior and exterior.

Follows assigned transportation routes and schedules; communicates delays or changes.

Completes mileage logs, inspection reports, and required transportation documentation.

Coordinates with program and facility staff to support events, field trips, deliveries, and off‑site activities.

Adheres to all City of Evanston driving policies and applicable traffic laws.

General Support

Provides courteous and professional customer service to participants, families, vendors, artists, and the public.

Supports recreation, arts, and cultural programming as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED required.

Experience in custodial services, facility maintenance, event support, or similar work preferred.

Experience driving vans or transporting passengers preferred.

Experience working with youth, seniors, or the public is a plus.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

Valid Illinois Driver's License with a clean driving record required.

Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire (City‑provided).

Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.

Knowledge of safety practices related to cleaning chemicals, equipment, and vehicle operation.

Ability to safely operate passenger vans and custodial equipment.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to interact professionally with staff and the public.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and during special events.

Pay Rate: $18/hr
