is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of
HVAC Mechanic
in the
Facilities Management Division . The incumbent is responsible for cleaning and performing preventative maintenance on HVAC & Refrigeration equipment; performs scheduled inspections of HVAC & Refrigeration equipment; troubleshoots, repairs, installs, and replaces new HVAC & refrigeration equipment; responds to environmental comfort calls, prepares and completes work orders. Scheduled work hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm however, the incumbent may be required to work beyond scheduled hours and weekends as required.
Completing routine preventative maintenance checks on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to determine if essential building/structural equipment such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, air conditioning, etc. is operating correctly and within required specifications
Conducting scheduled inspections. Troubleshoots and makes repairs. Installs and replaces HVAC and refrigeration equipment
Performing routine administrative duties such as: preparing and completing work orders and other paperwork; performing data entry and programming on electronic equipment; purchasing materials and parts; submitting completed work orders and quotes; and contacting vendors for parts and equipment pricing/delivery
Assisting to troubleshoot, develop, and build test equipment, as assigned
Performing other related duties as assigned
City of Richmond Public Works employees who work in this class are considered essential personnel and will be required to work during declared emergencies and major weather events.
Minimum Training and Experience
High School Diploma or GED
One year of vocational/technical training in HVAC systems/refrigeration
Two years of HVAC experience
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Preferred Training and Experience
Journeyman's HVAC Certification is preferred
Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements
Valid chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) certification from the Environmental Protection Agency
Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge (some combination of the following):
HVAC
Equipment used in area of focus
Basic electrical knowledge
Basic math
Safety procedures
Mechanics
Skills (some combination of the following):
HVAC equipment inspection, repair and installation
Troubleshooting
Computer proficiency, including data entry

Reading and comprehending installation instructions
Use standard HVAC equipment and tools such as voltmeters, refrigerant gauges, tape measures, and hand, power, and electrical tools

The employee is frequently required to crawl, reach extending hands and arms in any direction, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger (pick, pinch, type or otherwise work primarily with fingers), grasp applying pressure to an object with fingers or palm, talk, feel, and use substantial repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
