FULL TIME- EXEMPT

Pay Scale:

Hourly: Min - $48.03; Mid - $60.03; Max - $72.04

Annual: Min - $99,896; Mid - $124,870; Max - $149,843

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under general guidance and direction of the City Administrator, this exempt, at will, employee performs a variety of supervisory, professional and administrative work as the chief law enforcement officer of the City. This position requires the employee to be a certified Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) through the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) system upon hire. The employee’s duties involve personal risk and exposure to danger while actively preventing and detecting crime, enforcing state and local laws, and providing community protection. The employee must respond to emergencies and situations involving threats to public safety, making rapid and critical decisions affecting the lives and health of others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans, coordinates, and directs the activities of the Mapleton Police Department, including Police, Emergency Preparedness, and Animal Control.

Supervises department personnel directly or through subordinates; trains personnel; evaluates performance; disciplines employees as necessary.

Plans, coordinates, supervises and evaluates the Police Department operations including payroll, records, reporting and clerical functions, and the training of personnel.

Establishes departmental policy in order to enforce the law, administer the department, and implement directives from the City Administrator.

Develops the organizational structure including lines of authority, responsibility and communication for the department; revises the structure as required.

Coordinates all purchases for the department of the Police Department by authorizing purchases and writing specifications for new vehicles and equipment.

Prepares, reviews, and administers the department budgets.

Performs public relations work for the department; meets with elected or appointed officials, community and business representatives and the public.

Develops and maintains relationships with other municipal, state and federal Law Enforcement agencies. Coordinates and communicates with other agencies charged with duties related to Law Enforcement, such as mental health institutions, social welfare institutions and more.

Acts as a liaison with local courts, prosecutors, correctional agencies and the news media.

Responds to citizen complaints as necessary.

May work in the field conducting investigations, making arrests and performing other police functions on special cases or as needed.

Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.

Attends City Council meetings.

Performs related duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, or a related field of study and six (6) years of law enforcement command/supervisory experience or at least ten (10) years of law enforcement command/supervisory experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of local, state and federal law enforcement laws; thorough knowledge of law enforcement principles; knowledge of modern management practices and procedures; working knowledge of budgeting practices; considerable knowledge of supervision theory and practice. Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of police vehicles. Skill in dealing with individuals in adverse situations. Ability to supervise and coordinate the activities of a department; ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; ability to ensure compliance with and follow standard safety practices and procedures common to law enforcement work; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; ability to act with tact and impartiality.

Special Qualifications:

Upon hire, must be Utah POST certified as a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)

Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the city.

Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.

Must pass a background check and a drug test.
