Job Summary
The Unit Director (Nurse Manager) is responsible for the daily 24‑hour planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the overall operations of the department and participates actively in decision making related to departmental functions. Reporting to the Sr. Director for Patient Care Services, the director provides consistent clinical leadership and nursing practice oversight for UCSF Health Stanyan and Hyde Medical Centers. Functional areas of oversight include the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at both hospitals. The director ensures quality patient care in the ARU units, serves as a role model for professional nursing practice, manages staff that deliver clinical patient care, and administers personnel, fiscal, and material resources on a 24‑hour basis. Additionally, the director designs and oversees nursing and administrative operations in large and/or multiple patient care areas, is accountable for overall administrative planning and coordination of staffing, fiscal, and material resources, assists with the development and implementation of new programs and policies, and typically reports to supervisors and managers.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Salary range: $262,044 – $278,059 (Annual Rate). Annual bonus target = 7.5%, maximum 10%.

Department Description
The Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at UCSF Health Stanyan and Hyde Medical Centers is a CARF-accredited organization. It has a long history of excellence with the adult and elderly population, specializing in post‑stroke care and is one of the most well‑respected rehabilitation facilities in the Bay Area. The 43‑bed unit combines facilities at both centers, equipped with state‑of‑the‑art equipment to support rehabilitation care. The unit specializes in post‑stroke care, spine and traumatic brain injury, neurogenic impairment, burns, joint replacements, amputations, LVAD, transplant, and other qualifying and non‑qualifying acute rehab diagnoses.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
- Registered Nurse in the State of California
- Must have 5 years of nursing leadership experience & 3‑5 years of ARU experience in an Acute Rehabilitation Unit/Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF)
- Basic Life Support – AHA
- CRRN certification in inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) within 6 months
- Strong hospital management experience with progressive and in‑depth expertise in patient care services
- Knowledge of hospital/clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
- Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, including regulatory, legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments
- Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
- Ability to create and maintain a goal‑oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in a relevant area preferred
- Master’s Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements for CARF/IRF accreditation
License/Certification
- Registered Nurse in the State of California
