General Dynamics NASSCO, a division of General Dynamics Marine Systems, invites you to join our Machine Department in Norfolk, Virginia. Our mission spans ship construction, advanced ship repair, conversion, and maintenance for commercial and national defense assets. This opening is for two Outside Machinist (J4) positions working 0600 – 1445 with a 45‑minute lunch. Education & Experience

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants must bring: Minimum 5 (five) years of directly related experience in a shipyard environment. Compliance with all Journeyman 3 Outside Machinist requirements. Ability to furnish sizes, clearance, and recommendations to supervisor. Proficiency reading and using technical manuals, blueprints, and specification items. Essential Functions / Duties (All Journeyman Levels)

Experienced in machinery overhaul and installation, as well as testing of the following: Winches (electric, electro‑hydraulic) Anchor windlasses Steering gear Air compressors Pump and motor alignments Valve repairs Diesel engine repairs Hydraulic troubleshooting & repairs Reduction gear repairs Generator repairs Boat davit repairs Bearing fit‑up & installation Gas turbine repairs Louvers Aircraft elevators Underwater hull strain plate repairs Cranes Brakes Resilient mounts Emitter belts OD box removal/installation Sliding pad eye repairs Rast track repairs Propulsion experience includes: Shafting repairs and alignment (fixed & controllable pitch) Propeller removal and installation Rudder repair and installation Tool proficiency required: Fixed & portable grinders, drill presses, and presses Porta powers, hydraulic jacks, torches, torque wrenches Combination wrenches, socket sets, slip‑joint pliers, adjustable wrenches Wire pliers, hammers (ball‑peen, flat head, small mallet) Screwdrivers (flat & Phillips) Vise grips, 6” scale & 12’ tape measure Snap ring pliers, micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, pipe wrench, punch set, chisels Other tools as identified and determined as needed. Physical & Visual Requirements

Carry, lift, climb, pull, crawl, sit, stand, stoop, squeeze, kneel, talk, and listen are essential physical capabilities. Visual requirements demand clear acuity for tasks such as operating machines within arm’s reach. The role requires frequent climbing on and around ships, extended periods of standing and walking (75%), and work in tight, confined spaces. Exposure to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors, dust, and vibrations from ship and hand tools is expected. Working Relationships & Accountability

Reports to Shop Foreman/General Foreman or works with Crew Lead. Develops and maintains positive relationships with other machinists and supports a team approach. Accountable for effective, efficient, and safe completion of all assigned tasks. Accountability to Foreman/General Foreman and customer for safety, quality, cost and schedule. Principal Responsibilities

Ensure Work Authorization Form (WAF) is present on site and linked to the specific job. Comply with all safety requirements related to the job, such as special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work, and proper breathing apparatus. Confirm that you are trained or qualified for the assigned work (e.g., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs). Maintain safety and productivity standards while ensuring quality control. Complete a 30‑minute cool‑down period in hot work areas. Leave the job site in a safe and clean condition before departure.
