
Overview
The Public Defender plays a crucial role in providing legal representation to individuals who cannot afford to hire private counsel. This position requires a commitment to justice and advocacy for clients facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected throughout the legal process. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of various areas of law, including but not limited to immigration, personal injury, and workers' compensation law.
Duties
Represent clients in criminal cases, ensuring fair trial rights are upheld.
Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as Westlaw to prepare for cases.
Draft legal documents including motions, briefs, and pleadings.
Engage in negotiations with prosecutors to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
Provide guidance on tribal law regulations and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
Collaborate with other legal professionals within the law office to strategize case approaches.
Maintain accurate records of case progress and client communications.
Advocate for clients during hearings and trials, presenting evidence and arguments effectively.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction.
Strong knowledge of criminal law and procedures.
Familiarity with immigration law and personal injury law is preferred.
Proficient in legal research and writing skills; experience with Westlaw is a plus.
Ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Commitment to serving underrepresented populations and understanding their unique challenges.
Experience or knowledge of workers' compensation law is advantageous.
