Overview
This is an INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY POSTING! To qualify for this position, you must be a current member of the Rockford Fire Department in Rockford, Illinois. Applicants must also be in the rank of Lieutenant, assigned to a fire suppression company for a minimum of one (1) year. (time serving in an acting capacity does not count toward the one year). Any application submitted that does not meet the criteria listed above will be discarded.
Nature Of Work
To serve the public with supervisory work in training, supervising and managing the overall day-to-day activities of an assigned fire station involving several companies of Firefighter/Paramedics and Driver/Engineers providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials incidents, water rescue, disaster control, extrication and related services.
Distinguishing Features
Employees in this class are responsible for the effective and efficient overall day-to-day activities of the fire station personnel, apparatus, and equipment, in extinguishing fires, performing emergency medical services and rescue mitigation work.
Supervision is exercised over company personnel on an assigned shift as well as the overall fire station staff.
Work is performed with some independence within established policies and procedures, and is reviewed by superiors through observation of the effectiveness of work performed and the proficiency of assigned subordinates.
Essential Functions ( These essential duties are only illustrative)
Directs, supervises and/or oversees the day-to-day firefighting/emergency services activities of an assigned fire station, including responding to fire/emergency services calls, making technical decisions as to the best methods of extinguishing fires, providing emergency medical services, water rescue and extrication, and/or the mitigation of hazardous material incidents and/or ascertaining the need for and type of additional equipment necessary to counteract the emergency.
Trains/oversees training of fire station staff regarding the current best methods of fire suppression, providing emergency medical services, water rescue, extrication and/or mitigation of hazardous material incidents; evaluates training needs of individual subordinates.
Prepares/oversees preparation of variety of Department reports and records regarding equipment/facility maintenance, supply purchases, calls responded to, response time, action taken, annual employee performance review and related information.
Inspects fire station personnel quarters, oversees facility/equipment and records/reports and requests maintenance and repair of fire apparatus and/or fire station.
May perform specialized functions, including commercial building inspection, ordering and maintaining an inventory of medical and/or station supplies or providing specialized training to Department staff in area of expertise.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
One (1) year of service with the Department in the rank of Lieutenant on a fire suppression company (time serving in an acting capacity does not count toward the one year).
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Illinois Class B driver's license.
Certification as Firefighter III.
