Job Description Virginia Western Community College is a two‑year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board. The campus spans 70 acres southwest of Roanoke, VA, serving Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. Established in 1966, the College currently enrolls over 9,000 credit‑course students and more than 1,400 fast‑track workforce and continuing‑education students.
We are seeking a full‑time Campus Police Officer to protect persons and property on campus and adjacent streets. Services include professional and courteous response, daily patrol (foot and vehicle), enforcement of campus policies, securing buildings, reporting incidents, providing information and assistance to the campus community, enforcing parking and traffic regulations, conducting investigations of vehicular accidents and thefts, transporting funds, and reporting campus conditions during inclement weather.
Full‑time officers will be enrolled in the VaLORS retirement plan administered by the Virginia Retirement System. As a Virginia State government employee, many benefits are offered at low or no cost, including basic life insurance, the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, and up to 6 credit hours per semester tuition‑free under a promissory note.
Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Key Skills and Required Qualifications (KSA’s) Unexpired Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification, with a valid Virginia driver’s license. Must upload a copy of the certification at application. Considerable knowledge of public safety and security laws, legal codes, regulations, and equipment. Experience providing oral and written instructions and procedures. Experience writing, proofreading, and editing written reports. Experience reacting appropriately in emergency situations. Ability to work all shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating 12‑hour work schedules. Ability to carry equipment and perform foot and vehicle patrols.
Additional Considerations Operation of a State Vehicle: Yes. Supervises Employees: No. Required Travel: None. Court‑assigned duties may include campus grounds and surrounding community as needed in a marked Virginia Western police vehicle.
