Under the general supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent will work as a first‑line supervisor planning, coordinating, administering, and executing the work of a survey crew conducting preliminary, control, topographic, construction and cadastral land surveys. The incumbent will train subordinates to perform land survey duties including operation of precision surveying instruments, proper surveying procedures, equipment maintenance, survey calculations and note keeping. Position located at Caltrans, District 4 Office of Land Surveys, 125100 Mission Blvd., Hayward, Alameda County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. Field work: Must drive a vehicle to conduct normal work activities in all kinds of settings and conditions, including heavy freeway or highway traffic and in off‑road areas; and work at locations which may expose the Incumbent to adverse conditions including rough, steep and/or overgrown terrain; great heights; allergen‑producing vegetation including poison oak; insect and reptile bites and/or stings; loud noises; dust; chemicals; very noisy conditions; extreme weather conditions including hot, cold, wet, dusty and dirty environments. Field physical requirements: Hitting strenuous physical activities such as hiking for long distances; carrying equipment up to 40 pounds and pushing loads up to 80 pounds; stooping; bending; lifting; hammering with a sledgehammer; driving, sitting, walking or standing for long periods; using cutting tools to clear dense brush; lifting and swinging a sledgehammer weighing up to 20 pounds; lifting and transporting equipment up to 60 pounds; extensive walking over steep terrain while transporting stakes, supplies, and equipment. Telework: This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed. Minimum Requirements
California Land Surveyor license. Valid and unrestricted driver’s license for operating State vehicles. Must possess a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) or Land Surveyor (LS) certificate and submit a copy along with State application (STD 678). Must drive a vehicle to conduct normal work activities.
