Plan, organize and direct the central engineering; product reliability (wheels); product improvement (wheels), railroad products research laboratory and Tool Room activities to maintain the Company’s position and profitability of its operations and promote growth by assuring quality products and the improvement of products, equipment and plant facilities. Provides counsel and guidance on above activities to Griffin Canada, Inc. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Plans and directs the overall activities of Central Engineering to assure accurate, timely and cost-effective completion of engineering projects and engineering services to other departments.
Directs and coordinates the overall company product reliability activity establishing policies, procedures, standards of performance and controls to assure quality products.
Formulate and recommend developmental research programs to provide new or improved steel freight car and locomotive wheels.
Serves in an advisory capacity to Canada on Technical Services activities.
Direct the activities of the Tool Room in the design, manufacture and repair of special tooling’s and fabrication and machining of new or modified production equipment.
Participate in the formulation and implementation of capital expenditure budgets, direct objectives and long-range plans to assure a continued company growth.
Select, develop and motivate competent staff to assure an efficient and cost-effective operation and foster a high-performing culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration across all engineering teams.
Keep executive management informed on a periodic as needed basis of technical development to ensure their full appreciation and support of the various aspects of problems, projects and technological developments.
Maintain adequate records to support patent action, cooperate with AMSTED Patent Counsel in obtaining patent protection for the Company’s inventions.
Ensure functional alignment and readiness to support multiple programs, customers, and product development efforts
JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE 1. Bachelor degree in an engineering or technical field required. Advanced technical or specialized skills with proficiency attained through wide experience in specialized or technical field utilizing a group of involved practices/procedures and/or scientific theory and principles. Diverse experience, works on multiple projects with operational or conceptual integration or coordination of activities that are diverse in nature and objectives in important management areas.
2. Related experience; performs a variety of tasks with moderate level of supervision to varying specifications.
KEY CHALLENGES Outside the Company he works with customers, consultants, laboratories and universities on technical surveys and research projects.
This position requires a broad knowledge of a general technical field, human relations and experience in planning and directing Central Engineering, Product Reliability, Product Engineering, Railroad Products Research Laboratory and the Tool Room in implementing the general policies and goals of the Company.
