Position Summary: As part of the general administration of the College, the Vice President of Communications and Marketing is directly responsible to the College President/CEO. The Vice President acts within the college policy framework and oversees the development of college communication, marketing, student recruitment and branding strategies to advance the college brand and support its mission, vision, and goals. The role manages public relations and communication functions, represents the college in the community, directs internal and external communication strategies, supports crisis and issues management, and serves as the principal media liaison and spokesperson.

The Vice President will lead marketing initiatives including brand awareness, ad and media campaigns, media relations, web content, social media strategy, college publications, and marketing research and market segmentation. The role will collaborate with other college executives to lead integrated marketing efforts and will manage the College Relations team as well as contribute hands-on to communication and marketing efforts as needed. The Vice President has executive oversight of campus events and works with internal and external partners to support Del Mar College related events. Oversees community related sponsorship activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communications and marketing strategies aligned with the college mission and goals.
  • Oversee internal and external communications, crisis and issues management, and serve as College spokesperson as needed.
  • Lead brand positioning, messaging, campaigns, media relations, and tracking of marketing results.
  • Manage on-campus events and coordinate with internal and external partners to support events.
  • Provide executive oversight to sponsorship activities and crisis response planning.
  • Develop core marketing communications messaging and a strategic plan to raise program visibility and brand awareness.
  • Collaborate with college leadership to identify opportunities and implement communications strategies across stakeholder groups.
  • Plan and manage production of communications materials and media projects, ensuring brand-consistent messaging.
  • Prepare and administer budgets for communications and marketing areas; manage relationships with vendors.
  • Ensure appropriate use of the college name, logo, seal, and other branding symbols.
  • Serve on college committees and councils as required and perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in a senior management position in communications and marketing.
  • Three (3) years supervisory experience.

  • Ability to provide creative direction while collaborating with and inspiring a diverse creative team of professionals, interns, and consultants.
  • Skilled in writing and editing with a variety of print and online communications media.
  • Management/leadership skills in managing a comprehensive strategic communications department including media relations and internal and external marketing programs.
  • Skilled in creation, execution, and analysis of digital media campaigns.
  • Innovative leader with a track record of translating strategic thinking into action plans and implementation.
  • Ability to recognize and utilize new media technologies when appropriate.
  • Self-reliant, problem solver, results oriented.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, presentation and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic messages while leading and collaborating with a team.
  • Ability to think quickly with a clear brand-consistent voice.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Experience in Higher Education.

Job Duties

  • As a member of the Crisis Response team, recommend policies relating to crisis management and develop and maintain appropriate communications plans. Serve as College spokesperson during crisis incident.
  • Coordinate with other members of the Executive Team and College administrators to promote projects consistent with the mission of the College.
  • Manage internal/external resources to maximize creative production and promote organizational efficiency.
  • Manages and supports emergency and crisis communication for the College.
  • Develop core marketing communications messaging, positioning, and brand strategy.
  • Develop and implement a strategic marketing communications plan to advance brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and offerings; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the College; work with leadership to recognize opportunities and implement strategies to support them.
  • Serve as communications counselor to leadership; plan and manage production of radio, television, print media, web advertising projects, and target appropriate audience segments to produce desired results.
  • Further the interests of the College and the College District.
  • Serve on College Committees and/or Councils as required.
  • Prepare, recommend, and administer the budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor use of College name, workmark, logo, official seal, and other symbols to protect College image.
