Your Role As Business Development Manager (BDM) for the Intellectual Property (IP) department, you will work under the Senior Director, collaborating with IP leadership, practice group leaders, industry teams, Marketing, attorneys, and marketing team members to develop new business and deepen existing client relationships.

Essential Functions

Design and implement strategic business development plans that promote firm services and align with client objectives.

Maintain a rolling pipeline that tracks targets, opportunities, and progress to help attorneys achieve goals.

Coach lawyers in group and one‑on‑one settings, supporting individual attorney business development plans.

Drive follow‑up on assigned initiatives and coordinate efforts across practices and industries.

Assist with practice group budgeting, evaluating return on investment of expenditures.

Gather intelligence on emerging market and industry trends to position the firm competitively.

Manage contact databases and mailing lists relevant to practice groups.

Collaborate with Communications to identify press opportunities and provide IP content for pitch materials, proposals, and RFP responses.

Oversee strategy and development of events, sponsorships, and other marketing/communications activities.

Build relationships with key organizations as a market‑facing resource and ambassador for the firm.

Ensure the compilation and maintenance of relevant practice‑related content and materials.

Attend required training and education programs.

What We’re Looking For The ideal candidate demonstrates independent judgment, strategic and diplomatic thinking, and the ability to lead business development efforts while building consensus. A strong work ethic, team‑player attitude, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines are essential.

Required Experience Requirements include a college degree and experience in legal marketing. You must have excellent writing, editing, editing, communication, project management, interpersonal, and analytical skills; strong computer proficiency (including CRMs and marketing databases); and significant business knowledge and client service attitude. Prior law firm experience supporting IP practices is required; in lieu of IP experience, a law degree will be considered. Some travel may be required.

Salary The salary range for this position is $140,000 to $165,000 depending on experience and location.
