Role Overview Estes is seeking a Junior Designer to support the design and development of hobby rocket products. This role works closely with experienced designers on concept development, CAD design, prototyping, testing, and preparation for production. The primary focus is hobby rocketry, with opportunities to contribute to education and STEM‑related products as the business continues to grow.
Position Details
Salary Range: $58,000 – $62,000
Experience Level: 0–2 years
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Location: Remote / Hybrid
What You Will Do
Design and develop hobby rocket products from early concepts through production release
Create CAD models, assemblies, and drawings using CAD Software
Build, fly, test, and evaluate model rocket prototypes
Ownership of the project workbook. i.e., product brief, specifications, product parts lists, test flight results, results, and lessons learned.
Communicate design intent, test results, and technical issues clearly to the team
Support design‑for‑manufacturing and design‑for‑assembly efforts
Work with internal teams and suppliers on injection and blow mold tooling
Participate in product safety reviews and failure mode analysis
Support development of education and STEM‑focused products
Contribute as a hands‑on designer in a small, collaborative product development environment
Communicate to the team of any concerns or issues with projects within a timely manner
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
0–2 years of engineering or product development experience (internships and co‑ops acceptable)
Strong proficiency in CAD/SolidWorks, including parts, assemblies, and drawings
Experience creating and maintaining engineering documentation
Strong mechanical intuition and problem‑solving skills
Model rocket building skills
Preferred Qualifications
Hands‑on experience with prototyping, testing, and 3D printing
Basic shop or fabrication experience
Familiarity with RockSim, OpenRocket, or similar tools
Ability to work independently while learning from senior engineers
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Enthusiasm for rocketry, aerospace, and STEM education
Active engagement in the rocketry hobby
