MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our shipyard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

JOB SUMMARY Plans and oversees painting and related activities; supervises staff assigned to the Paint Shop.

SUPERVISES Paint Assistant Superintendent, Leadman 1st & 2nd Step, Painting Specialists, 1st-3rd Class Painters, and Helpers

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Evaluates work to be done to include reviewing job specifications.

Supervises the activities of the Paint Shop personnel directly or indirectly and maximizes efficiency and productivity of production workers. Assists with scheduling day-to-day activities.

Responsible for resolving issues regarding day-to-day operations.

Confers with Director of Production, other Superintendents, and subcontractors to coordinate work schedules.

Ensures that machinery, equipment, and facilities are properly maintained for efficient production and eliminate wasteful practices within the department.

Responsible for identifying improved methods, and efficient and economic utilization of materials. Orders new equipment as needed.

Ensures adherence to company policies, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices. Writes procedures for Paint Shop.

Maintains good employee relations practices within department and takes corrective action as required.

Recommends the hiring and release of Paint Shop personnel as required to maintain production schedule.

Establishes Paint Department priorities, goals, and expectations.

Administers performance evaluations to all Paint Department personnel.

Assigns and/or conducts departmental training.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Keep records of departmental activities as required.

Perform other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent.

Ten years of related work experience with increasing supervisory responsibilities and NACE NBPI Certification.

Must have knowledge of a variety of concepts, practices, procedures, and safety measures regarding Paint Shop operations including knowledge of ship's systems and OSHA requirements.

Must have detailed knowledge of all abrasive blast systems, spray pumps, spray booth, shop overhead crane, air compressors, and Q.A./Q.C. test instruments to include destructive and non-destructive.

Ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to motivate others.

Basic computer skills.
