This Specialist, Risk Management position will support Agribusiness Risk Management across a territory that includes Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Qualified candidates should reside in central Indiana to central Ohio or in surrounding areas. Experience or knowledge of agribusiness is preferred.

Our agribusiness risk management team is an integral part of our organization. We develop relationships with customers, conduct survey work to look at property and casualty exposures and recommend improvements that decrease risk. Through collaboration we share our knowledge and expertise across Nationwide to enhance our agriculture insurance lines and their market position.

With moderate supervision, this role evaluates high complexity middle market risks in select geographic regions of the United States. The role conducts onsite surveys of clients’ operations to identify and evaluate risk exposures associated with all lines of Property and Casualty insurance coverage. It visually inspects operations and interviews client representatives to determine underlying risk exposures and potential causes of loss. The role works with the ambiguity of limited code enforcement and regulation, determines if existing risk controls are adequate to prevent or mitigate losses, develops recommendations to assist clients with managing risk, consults with Underwriting regarding exposures and improvement opportunities, and writes comprehensive reports that document client hazards, exposures, controls and effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

Research client information using internal and external resources, analyze loss exposures, and assess the effectiveness of controls.

Analyze portfolio of assigned clients to identify frequency and severity trends, prioritize survey activity, and communicate potential services and solutions to customers.

Advise Underwriting on risk insurability and coverages, determine effectiveness of operational risk controls, and provide recommendations to improve risk management.

Manage travel, workload, and special projects to meet agreed upon timelines.

Consult with Underwriting and clients regarding risk analysis, recommendations, and service needs.

Create comprehensive technical reports and recommendations, and communicate risk reduction recommendations to underwriting, clients, and agents.

Maintain a portfolio of clients, build strong relationships with senior leadership, and serve as an ongoing risk management resource.

Participate in training classes, department and company meetings, and develop a professional development plan.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to manager or director. Does not have direct reports and may be asked to mentor other Risk Management Consultants or interns.

Typical Skills and Experiences Education:

BS/BA in insurance, risk management, agriculture, food, engineering, business administration, safety or equivalent experience.

License/Certification:

Obtain required Federal and/or State licenses/registrations within the designated time period. Additional licenses may be required when new products and services are implemented.

Experience:

Six to eight years of experience in commercial underwriting, claims adjusting, loss control/safety, or related commercial insurance fields.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of worker’s compensation, fleet, general liability and property insurance coverage; in-depth understanding of risk management issues and loss drivers; strong verbal and written communication skills; desire to learn, grow and develop; interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize work; computer proficiency.

Other criteria, including leadership skills and competencies, may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Frequent and overnight travel required; capable of physical surveys, climbing, stooping, bending, balancing at various heights, crawling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.; may require relocation; office‑ or field‑based; valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
