
Sr. Underwriter I- Inland Marine

CopperPoint has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Underwriter I. In this role, you’ll play a key part in supporting short- and long-term business strategies to drive profitable growth. You’ll leverage your technical underwriting expertise to evaluate risks, collaborate with agency partners, and help achieve business objectives within your assigned territory. Working closely with a Business Development Representative, you’ll contribute to strategic marketing and relationship-building efforts that strengthen CopperPoint’s market presence. Additionally, you’ll provide training, coaching, and mentorship to less experienced underwriters—helping build a strong, knowledgeable team.
Job Responsibilities
Analyzes commercial accounts to manage profitability, growth, and retention by evaluating risk, exposure, and controls. Adheres to individual authority levels.
Prices business according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines.
Underwrites new and renewal accounts, balancing pricing and risk selection to drive profitable growth while maintaining strong producer relationships.
Communicates with agency personnel on underwriting issues including declinations, cancellations, exposure concerns and loss control survey results.
Maintains the highest level of customer service internally and externally.
Build and maintain strong agent and broker relationships through regular in-person meetings to market CopperPoint products; travel may be required for ongoing engagement.
In collaboration with their business development representative must be able to hold the agency accountable for flow, hit ratio, new business and retention goals.
Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
Educates the agency staff on company products, services and underwriting philosophy.
Establishes positive relationships with internal/external stakeholders through communication and collaboration.
Qualifications
BS/BA college degree resulting in the knowledge and skill levels acquired through undergraduate level studies especially in the areas of business administration, finance or marketing.
Minimum of 3 years of inland marine insurance experience.
Advanced knowledge and/or experience with commercial lines underwriting.
Strong sales and marketing skills which requires the ability to qualify opportunities and close deals.
Ability to work in a team environment
Strong communication and negotiation skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Analytical skills and attention to detail.
Certificates are considered a plus:
General Insurance program (INS)
Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU)
Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
Associate in Risk Management (ARM)
Certified Risk Manager (CRM)
Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC)
