Overview
The Senior Editor, Investigations, will be a leader in our nationally renowned investigative, podcast, and documentary journalism unit, APM Reports, and the award-winning newsroom at MPR News. The ideal candidate will shape stories across channels including digital long-reads, data visualizations, social media and video, and work collaboratively with leaders and teams from other departments and other news organizations. The Senior Editor will work on future seasons of our hit podcast Sold a Story and another investigative podcast in development, as well as collaborations with MPR News and other public media organizations. There may be opportunities to act as a player/coach with the teams they lead.
This position sits in the collective bargaining agreement between MPR and SAG-AFTRA (“SAG-AFTRA”).
Compensation and Location Expected Compensation Range:
$90,000 - $108,000 USD annualized. Exact rate determined by experience and education, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.
Work Location:
Hybrid - St. Paul, MN

Position Responsibilities
Guide and refine investigative projects across a variety of channels — podcasts, radio, digital, social and video
Train and mentor journalists in investigative techniques, storytelling, writing and audio production
Demonstrate expertise in the technology, tools and processes necessary to produce superior investigative and documentary journalism on all channels, including but not limited to podcasts, radio, websites, newsletters, social media, video, and other evolving products
Serve as a player/coach on investigative projects
Manage relationships with internal and external news partners
Foster a creative and productive teamwork environment
Other duties as assigned
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
5 years editing or equivalent experience, including guiding content and workflows of others
Minimum of 5 years reporting experience
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to foster exceptional standards while coaching, inspiring and leading
Experience developing longform audio and investigative projects
Experience planning investigations and managing/training others for exceptional performance
Strong editing skills: vetting pitches, leading teams through reporting challenges, structuring narrative arcs, copy editing
Fluency with audio editing platforms, spreadsheets and collaboration tools (e.g. Slack, SharePoint, Dropbox, Google Docs)
Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously
Excellent coaching, communication and teamwork skills
Commitment to an inclusive and equitable workplace
Commitment to accountability journalism in the public interest
Understanding of quality management and continuous improvement
Knowledge of the law and its application to journalism, including experience navigating public records requests
Ability to work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner aligned with APMG’s mission, values and professional standards
Preferred Skills and Experience
Track records of excellence in longform print journalism, video, data and/or photography
Experience with legal review, fact checking and ensuring accuracy of every element (crossfades, music cues, etc.)
Experience advancing organizational equity and inclusion efforts
Language skills such as proficiency in Spanish, Hmong, Somali or another language used by a large number of people in the U.S. or Minnesota
