As the Marketing Services Manager for the Northern California Area Water Business Group (NorCal WBG), you’ll help lead a team at the forefront of driving innovation, building strategic partnerships, and unlocking opportunities in drinking water, wastewater, and water resources planning and design. This role emphasizes sustainable solutions for communities and lasting impact.
Working in partnership with the Northern California WBG Business Development Leaders (BDLs) and Management, the Marketing Services Manager leads a group of marketing coordinators and proposal managers to implement go/no-go decisions, develop effective strategies and messaging for NorCal WBG client pursuits, deliver high-quality proposals and interviews, and partner with management to meet growth goals.
Responsibilities
Retain, develop and supervise proposal and marketing employees, as assigned
Ensure the go/no-go decision process is applied in accordance with HDR's Matrix of Authority
Oversee/lead pursuit teams in creating and implementing win strategies, key messaging, and pursuit materials to ensure messaging clarity and consistency (capture planning)
Facilitate pursuit teams to develop persuasive proposal and interview materials
Develop and manage proposal schedules and confirm compliance for all pursuits in NorCal WBG
Engage the appropriate marketing services resources in pursuit teams
Develop scalable processes for proposal development, marketing workflows, and templates (including AI-enabled tools) to ensure best practices
Lead quality reviews of proposal and interview materials
Coach interview teams to deliver effective key messages during interviews
Facilitate debriefs to identify improvement opportunities and measure overall competitiveness
Recognize and celebrate pursuit successes and milestones
Manage workload demands of proposal managers and marketing coordinators
Identify candidates to fill open marketing positions
Train, mentor, and onboard marketing employees on the proposal process and best practices
Manage client relationship management and financial systems to inform reporting metrics and dashboards
Support the development of annual and long-term strategic plans, including growth initiatives and prioritizing strategic investments
Implement key growth initiatives as defined in strategic plans
Develop and implement client plans, including long-term strategies to capture market share
Create marketing collateral to support business development
Develop business relationships with teaming partners
Direct content marketing campaigns to strengthen HDR’s brand, increase visibility, and showcase thought leaders
Develop and publish engaging digital content reflecting HDR’s brand and thought leadership
Implement strategies to elevate HDR’s brand and technical talent with industry associations
Assist in planning and fulfilling conference sponsorship benefits, as needed
Develop engaging internal communications content (announcements, presentations, videos, webinars)
Arrange professional photography on projects
Coordinate large internal meetings (in-person and virtual)
Articulate HDR’s capabilities and competitive advantages
Maintain inventory of branded materials for client visits, conferences, and recruiting
Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field
Deep knowledge of the A/E/C industry's standard procurement of professional services
10+ years of experience leading or managing proposal efforts within the A/E/C industry
Ability to work effectively with various staff and teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Required Qualifications
A minimum of 8 years relevant industry experience
Demonstrated self-starter with a history of completing projects with limited oversight
Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire others
Experience in sales and developing effective win strategies
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (InDesign)
Ability and willingness to travel and engage with others in person
Demonstrated experience in winning high-value contracts in the A/E/C industry
Demonstrated experience in writing compelling content based on information from technical staff
