Job Summary The Senior Commissioning Agent is a highly experienced professional responsible for leading, managing, and executing comprehensive commissioning and retro-commissioning services for complex building systems. This role provides technical leadership across all phases of a project—from design review through functional performance testing, owner training, and warranty closeout—ensuring building systems meet owner objectives, design intent, and operational performance requirements.

The Senior Commissioning Agent independently plans and conducts commissioning activities requiring advanced judgment, technical expertise, and coordination with owners, designers, contractors, and internal team members. In addition to direct project execution, this role oversees and supports other commissioning staff, manages multiple projects and client relationships, and contributes to the firm’s reputation for technical excellence, professionalism, and integrity.

This position actively supports the organization’s mission, vision, and core values by delivering high-quality commissioning services that improve building performance, reliability, and long-term operational success.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage commissioning and retro-commissioning projects from design through construction, occupancy, and warranty closeout.

Develop and execute commissioning plans, specifications, testing procedures, and documentation in alignment with owner objectives and design intent.

Coordinate and lead commissioning teams; chair commissioning meetings and collaborate with owners, designers, contractors, and internal staff.

Perform design, submittal, and construction phase reviews to ensure system performance, quality, and constructability.

Witness and document system start-ups, testing, balancing, and functional performance testing; analyze BAS/DDC trend data to validate system operation.

Maintain and manage commissioning documentation, including issue logs, test results, reports, and final commissioning records.

Oversee owner training, review O&M manuals, and support long-term system operation and maintenance.

Conduct retro-commissioning assessments, system diagnostics, and performance evaluations; prepare findings and recommendations.

Perform seasonal testing and warranty reviews, including pre-warranty expiration evaluations.

Manage multiple projects and client relationships while providing technical leadership, mentorship, and oversight to commissioning staff.

Estimate resource needs, develop schedules, and assign work to meet project milestones and deliverables.

Qualifications And Experience

Bachelor’s degree or Associate of Applied Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field (preferred).

Professional Engineering (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) actively pursuing licensure (preferred).

Minimum of one recognized professional commissioning accreditation (required).

LEED AP BD+C credential (preferred).

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in building systems commissioning.

Demonstrated experience leading commissioning and retro-commissioning projects for complex mechanical, HVAC, and control systems.

Proven ability to independently manage projects, make sound technical judgments, and resolve complex system issues.

Technical & Professional Skills

Strong knowledge of HVAC, controls, TAB, and building automation systems.

Ability to interpret and evaluate construction documents, specifications, and system performance data.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of formal technical reports.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Demonstrated leadership, professionalism, and commitment to quality, integrity, and client service.

Location : Rochester, New York

Travel : Up to 50-75%

Compensation & Benefits The expected base salary range for this role is

$87,360-$120,000 USD

per year, hourly, non-exempt. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
