The Florida Department of Health is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency it monitors health status, diagnoses and investigates health problems, mobilizes local communities, and provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children. The department implements policies and plans that protect the health of residents and visitors, link people to needed health‑care services, and enforce the laws that guard public health.

Responsibilities

Train, motivate, evaluate and monitor the daily work activities of Public Health Nutritionists, Nutrition Educators, Public Assistance Specialists, Health Support Specialists, Senior Clerks and a Health Support Technician; review and analyze productivity and performance monthly.

Complete WIC certifications by providing nutrition assessments and counseling, and deliver breastfeeding education and support to clients.

Consult with health‑care practitioners to determine nutrition or health needs and prescribe diet plans; develop, document and implement nutrition care plans, and provide follow‑up and referral as needed.

Review annual Q/A team audit results, prepare corrective action plans for all clinic deficiencies, monitor key process indicators, and ensure clinic and nutrition division goals are met.

Prepare materials and reports for Nutrition Education requested by Federal and State auditors; coordinate with the Senior Human Services Program Manager on the Nutrition Education plan for WIC participants.

Conduct or attend health‑related meetings, staff meetings, committees and work groups; assist with outreach activities, health fairs and community events as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Effective verbal and written communication and telephone etiquette skills.

Knowledge of local, state and federal WIC Program policies and procedures.

Knowledge of current science and practice of food, nutrition and dietetics; normal nutrition principles and dietary needs throughout the life cycle.

Ability to assess appropriate and effective feeding for women, infants and children; effectively counsel using VENA techniques.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Nutrition charting techniques using the designated format.

Basic office equipment proficiency (computer, digital scale, stature board, Hemocue, copier, telephone).

Computer skills: proficiency in Excel and Word.

Excellent customer service skills; maintain client confidentiality and effective working relationships.

Ability to lift and transfer supplies required for job duties.

Qualifications Minimum:

Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home Economics with a Nutrition emphasis per WIC Federal Regulation, CFR, Title 7, Part 246.

Meet Florida Statutes Chapter 468, Part X or be eligible to practice dietetics under Chapter 64B8‑40 to 45, Florida Administrative Code.

Valid State of Florida License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance.

Preferred:

Minimum two years of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program experience.

Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish or English and Haitian Creole.
