The Opportunity
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician, under general supervision, performs advanced functions requiring technical knowledge of electronic applications standards and document control processes. This role is responsible for the development of site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and Bentley MicroStation.
The Team
This role will be within the Black & Veatch Energy and Process Industries (E&PI) group, supporting client needs related to Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. Advanced Civil 3D experience is required with use of proposed grading surfaces and plan development.
Job Summary Functions in a project engineering technician capacity.
Under general direction, supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables.
Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions.
Utilizes digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
Provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.
Key Responsibilities Applies knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and BV policies and procedures.
Reviews project requirements and accurately determines the correct format and contents of the required deliverables.
Proactively applies BV Quality Program to deliverables; demonstrates personal accuracy and supports continuous improvement and change management efforts.
Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency; assists to ensure deliverables comply with codes and standards suitable for the project.
Applies basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables; begins to apply judgment in deliverables and input interpretation.
Capable of handling difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise and can provide technical guidance to other professionals.
Performs design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records.
May review the deliverables of others and define work assignments; may program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities.
Coordinates with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information; may support field activities and focus on internal clients while understanding external client drivers.
Proactively seeks and shares knowledge of latest technologies and processes; applies judgment and makes decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation.
Preferred Qualifications
Diploma or Certificate preferred. Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Work Environment / Physical Demands This position requires working in a typical office environment; may entail prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, with potential physical tasks during site visits (crouching, grasping, standing/walking for extended periods).
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
