Graphic Designer (Part-Time Hourly, 30+ Hours a Week)
Lydia Writes Good, Grand Rapids, Michigan, us, 49528
Job Title:
Graphic Designer (Part-Time Hourly, 30+ Hours a Week) Location:
Grand Rapids, MI. Preference will be given to candidates located within a reasonable distance to regularly come into our studio. About Lydia Writes Good (LWG):
We’re an award-winning, independent, micro ad agency and brand studio that’s super passionate about helping brands breakthrough the noise to tell their stories via design and copy. Our work spans print, digital, social, and video for a variety of clients, from small startups to corporate giants, and local storefronts to global operations. The Role:
We’re looking for a Graphic Designer, either Junior or Mid-Level, to join our team “full-time.” (At LWG, full-time is considered 30 hours per week, Monday thru Thursday.) You’ll work closely with our Senior Designer and Creative Director to help bring concepts to life. This is an entry-level role with room to grow, perfect for someone who’s ready to take their design skills to the next level. We believe cool clients don't need a jumbo agency to take brands to the next level. Our nimble number enables us to get rid of the bureaucracy and bloat that gets in the way of delivering pure, potent, unfiltered creativity. Which is why we are so intentional when expanding our bench. What You’ll Do:
We are here to honor what all of us can bring to the table and learn from one another at every phase of our careers. In the spirit of intentional expansion, collaboration, and teaching and learning, the Graphic Designer role would fulfill: Design digital and print assets, including social graphics, presentations, ads, and marketing collateral. Collaborate with copywriters, designers, and project managers to develop concepts that meet client or brand goals. Maintain brand consistency across all touchpoints. Production, resizing, and getting files prepped for print. Assist with print and digital layout, web design, and basic motion graphics when needed. Take feedback openly and iterate quickly to improve designs. You’re Perfect for This Role If You Have … 1-3 years of experience working professionally as a creative. (Internships count!) Agency experience. (Not required but preferred!) A strong portfolio that demonstrates creativity, conceptual thinking skills, typography, layout, and attention to detail. Willingness to come into the office regularly. We know it’s kind of old school, but because we are a nimble team that moves quickly for our clients, we see the value in being together. A want for a full-time-type job without the commitment to 40 hours a week, built for work-life balance. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Figma. Bonus points for After Effects, Canva, dev experience, and digital illustration skills. Good communication skills, a baseline knowledge of all things production, and a willingness to learn. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with a positive attitude. (We’re very serious about the positive attitude.) A self-sufficient approach to work. You can run your own schedule, handle deadlines, and solve creative problems without handholding. We also LOVE a multi-hyphenate creative. Are you a great graphic designer, but have a big passion for shooting photos or video? Or maybe you’re passionate about printmaking, writing, or DJ-ing? Bring it all to us. We love it! What’s It Like to Work for LWG? We believe the old model is not only outdated, but broken — so, we do things a little differently. Here’s what we mean: 30-hour workweeks.
Although this is technically considered a part-time role, “full-time” employment at LWG is 30+ flexible hours a week. This is to help give you a schedule that feels like your own and a way to overcome the burnout that is typical of ad agency employees. Paid overtime.
You will be paid an hourly rate that is comparable to a salaried employee at your skill level. If you work more than 40 hours a week (80 hours per pay period), you will be paid time-and-a-half. 90-day trial period.
To make sure we’re the right fit for each other, we’ll start with three months of a trial period. Remote flexibility.
We’d love you to be in the office Monday thru Thursday whenever possible. But we understand if you need to work remote for whatever reason. We’re super flexible on that. For the first couple of months, we’d love to have you in-office as much as possible, so we can learn your working style. Closed on Fridays all year long.
Hours are Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with a lunch break somewhere in there. A total of 5 weeks PTO.
3 weeks of paid time off, plus 2 weeks of paid studio closure: the week of July 4 th and in between Christmas and New Year’s. These are paid at 7 hours per day for 4 days per week. Plus, we’re closed and paid on all major holidays. A Macbook and software subscriptions.
We will supply you with the hardware (computer) and a software (subscriptions to Adobe, Microsoft 365, etc.) you need to do your job well. Casual environment and attire.
Office attire is casual but professionalizes depending on the client engagement as necessary. All the snacks and drinks you want.
Frequent snacks, team lunches, and bevvies on the company. Plus, a well-stocked beverage fridge and in-office snacks. Small team dreams.
You’ll work alongside Lydia, Meagen, and Lisa to learn not only project demands to meet current workload but expand your design prowess. Free parking.
We’re located conveniently in Midtown Grand Rapids, and we’ve got lots of street parking and a small parking lot out back. Dogs in the office!
(If you’re not allergic.) What We Cannot Offer at This Time: Health insurance Retirement contributions Expectations of Work: Client confidentiality.
Many clients are open to shouting from the rooftops, others are under strict confidentiality. Working with LWG means operating under our confidentiality contracts with clients to not share any insider information learned through these engagements. If there is question about who may be, just ask! Clients we work on, and that you may be assigned to include the following: Bell’s Brewery, Hush Puppies, Chaco, Haworth, Amway, AHC Hospitality, GFS, Saugatuck Center for the Arts, lots of small owner-operated businesses, and many more. Office chores.
We operate our office like our own homes; we just clean it up. And we’ve gotta keep our plants alive. Working for us and only us.
If you want to freelance for friends and fam, that’s totally cool. But when you’re on the clock for LWG or using our hardware, you’ll need to focus on LWG projects ONLY. We do not allow employees to work for competing agencies or studios. Ability to sit or stand to complete work in a computer-based role. Ability to get to and from office or client meetings as needed (client-related travel will be discussed and subsidized at federal mileage rate). Employee will be responsible for invoicing for hours completed biweekly. Creating a Safe Space is Super Important to Us: Just so you know what you’re walking into (if our website and Instagram presence didn’t make it obvious): We are a woman- and queer-owned studio that is very progressive, LGBTQ-friendly, anti-racist, feminist, and inclusive of all bodies and abilities. We are also very open to feedback on how we can grow, learn, and continue to support our community through activism. How to Apply Think our Graphic Designer position is right for you? Well then, we wanna meet you! Send an email to hello@lydiawritesgood.com with a link to your portfolio, your resume, and a little note about why you think you’d be right for the job. PLEASE NOTE THAT LINKEDIN ONLY APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE SEEN!
