
Overview
The Senior Tax Preparer is responsible for preparing, reviewing, and finalizing complex individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns while ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role requires a high level of technical tax knowledge, strong client communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Tax Preparer will also support junior staff, contribute to process improvements, and assist with tax planning strategies.
Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Review
Prepare and review complex federal and state tax returns including:
Individuals (high-net-worth, multi-state, investment-heavy)
Partnerships (1065)
Corporations (1120, 1120S)
Trusts & Estates (1041)
Analyze financial statements, trial balances, and source documents to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Identify tax-saving opportunities and planning strategies for clients.
Research and interpret tax laws and regulations to ensure correct application.
Client Support & Advisory
Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients.
Communicate clearly regarding tax requirements, deadlines, and documentation.
Advise clients on estimated tax payments, extensions, and compliance issues.
Assist with tax notices, audits, and correspondence with taxing authorities.
Compliance & Quality Control
Ensure all filings meet federal, state, and local requirements.
Monitor regulatory changes and apply them to client work.
Maintain detailed workpapers and documentation to support all returns.
Review junior staff work for accuracy and provide coaching and feedback.
Team & Process Leadership
Mentor and support junior tax preparers.
Assist with workflow management during peak seasons.
Help improve internal processes, checklists, and documentation standards.
Support firm initiatives related to automation and efficiency.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master's preferred)
5+ years of professional tax preparation experience
CPA or EA certification strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of federal and multi-state tax regulations
Experience with high-net-worth individuals and business entities
Proficiency in tax software (e.g., ProSystem fx, UltraTax, Drake, Lacerte)
Strong Excel and accounting software skills
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication abilities
Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
