Overview

This position will serve as the Seasonal Camp Director for DPF 4-H Camp, a residential summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County, located in Riverhead, New York. The primary responsibilities include all aspects (administrative and program) under the direction of the Executive Director. The role ensures compliance with the camp safety plan submitted to the Suffolk County Department of Health and ACA standards and is responsible for the overall safety, management and evaluation of the camp facility including rental groups during the camp season. The position accepts and performs all duties outlined in this description, and performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director for the successful running of the camp program. Note: this position does not include cabin responsibilities unless deemed necessary.

Required Qualifications

Must be at least 25 years of age or have a Bachelor’s Degree to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations. DPF 4-H Camp may apply for an age waiver to the NYS Department of Health as needed. Must have at least 24 weeks of administrative or supervisory experience in camping or related experience. Must live on-site during the entire camp season. Ability to work non-traditional work schedule including evenings and weekends. Ability to meet the travel requirements of the position. Ability to transport passengers and equipment with or without accommodations and meet acceptable driving checks and standards. Ability to clearly communicate and read and write in English. Proficiency with Windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher and Excel). Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools as well as electronic technology. Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity. Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED. American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies with Epi Pen. American Red Cross Basic Swim Instructor. American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Suffolk County Food Handlers Certification. Approved Belay Operator. Level 1 Archery Instructor of 4-H Shooting Sports. Level 1 Small Boat Instructor or Canoe/Kayak Instructor. Knowledge of equine instruction.

Responsibilities / Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities – 10% Assess/lead evaluation processes for staff performance and youth development outcomes. With the Executive Director plan for annual marketing and advertising taking into account budget, reach and responses. In collaboration with the Executive Director, Camp Committee, CCE NYS Camp Team Leader and seasonal staff develop programs that fulfill the educational mission and goals of 4-H youth development and deliver high quality programs that are age appropriate. Work on the expansion of camp programs to serve more youth. Run Open Houses and educational sessions in local communities to promote programs. Promote positive youth development based on 4-H essential elements. Support high quality instruction, challenging learning experiences and developmentally appropriate activities at all levels of the camp program. Promote strategies for creating safe, healthy and supportive environments for campers and staff and how to work with campers and staff experiencing homesickness, conflict and special needs. Develop and maintain the CIT and Apprentice program; make recommendations on growing and enhancing programs. Implement health and safety guidelines and procedures described in the camp safety plan that is approved by NYS and Suffolk County Department of Health. Request input from youth, families and staff regarding the quality, safety and enjoyment of the program. Make recommendations for program changes and additions. Assist in the overall camp evaluation process to ensure parent/camper satisfaction.

Administrative Responsibilities – 85% Maintain good standings with NYS and Suffolk County Department of Health and ACA accreditation. Coordinate Open Houses; assist registrar and office staff with general office and reception tasks as necessary. Assist with taking photos/videos for marketing, social media and Bunk 1; write articles and success stories for newsletters and brochures. Provide supervision and coordinate work of seasonal staff and Educator, including assignment of duties, training, oversight and performance reviews. Perform local human resources and payroll support (hiring procedures, onboarding, timekeeping, background screening, etc.). Maintain staff ratios in accordance with NYS DOH, Suffolk County DOH and ACA standards. Provide staff training and orientation to ensure a safe environment for campers. Motivate staff to seek continuous improvement and excellence. Monitor and manage communications and logistics including radios, weather considerations, schedules, and camper arrivals/departures. Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; prepare purchase orders and maintain documentation. Oversee facility maintenance, agency vehicles, and office equipment; recommend improvements. Maintain facilities and equipment maintenance logs; take corrective action to reduce risk and ensure safety. Assist with off-season rentals and staffing as needed; assist with the Suffolk County DOH permit application. Maintain ACA standards and documentation; act as the camp health designee; document critical events; manage post-incident communication and responses. Communicate daily with the Executive Director, Facilities Manager, Farm Supervisor, Educator, Assistant Directors and Unit leaders to proactively identify and address areas of concern. Ensure off-site transportation is conducted safely and in compliance with NYS DoH and CCE policy; coordinate with nutrition staff to maintain healthy food options and monitor budget and waste. Coordinate ordering of supplies and supervise the kitchen, pantry and storage areas per DOH standards. Work with registration software for training and reporting; assist with statistical data for sessions and programs. Lead end-of-season evaluations for staff performance and youth development, including coaching and development opportunities. Develop and pursue professional development plans and operating budgets in cooperation with the Executive Director. Monitor health and safety policies and practices for campers and staff; assist in developing camp crisis management and emergency procedures. Secure necessary operating permits from relevant agencies; maintain external relationships with insurers, law enforcement, and inspectors. Meet quality standards and maintain ACA accreditation. Assist Executive Director with maintaining external relationships and addressing health and safety issues.

Professional Improvement – 5%

Attend DPF 4-H Camp orientation/training and participate in staff meetings and required training events. Develop a professional development plan to increase competencies related to position accountabilities and evolving programs. Collaborate in activities supporting Cornell Cooperative Extension, including reporting expenses and coordinating with other staff.

Health and Safety

Support a safe working environment; follow applicable regulations and health and safety policies. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a seasonal exempt, full-time position, 100% FTE. The salary will range from $14,000 to $17,000 commensurate with experience.
