The San Francisco Examiner
is seeking an ambitious, curious, driven, and well-sourced
City Reporter
to cover San Francisco — one of the most dynamic and complex urban environments in the country. You will be responsible for delivering sharp, insightful and impactful journalism that brings the city to life for our readers, whether that’s through breaking news, policy analysis, enterprise features or neighborhood profiles.
This is a beat that spans City Hall and small businesses, housing and homelessness, transit, culture, and the shifting tech-economy landscape — and we’re looking for someone who can connect the dots with clarity and empathy.
Key Responsibilities
Report and write
daily news stories ,
features
and
enterprise pieces
with accuracy, fairness, and depth.
Build and maintain relationships with
city officials , community leaders, local organizations and residents across San Francisco’s diverse neighborhoods.
Pitch compelling, original story ideas that reflect the city’s complexity and the voices often underrepresented in mainstream media.
Collaborate with editors, photojournalists, designers and data teams to enhance storytelling across platforms.
Monitor and engage with public records, city council meetings, press conferences and emerging stories.
Contribute to live coverage and
breaking news events , including elections or public emergencies.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in a reporting role, preferably with an urban or local-news focus.
Deep understanding of San Francisco’s political, social and cultural landscape — or a strong willingness to learn quickly.
Strong writing, interviewing and research skills; ability to file clean copy on deadline.
Comfort with public records requests, data journalism and accountability reporting.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends when news breaks.
Spanish, Cantonese or other language skills a plus.
