ROLE DESCRIPTION Director of Safety & Security

This position offices in-person, on campus

ROLE SUMMARY The Director of Safety & Security is responsible for the strategic development, implementation and oversight of a comprehensive, forward-thinking safety & security program at a school of 1,200 students, with 200 faculty and staff, on a 35-acre suburban campus with multiple buildings. Valor Christian is seeking an individual with extensive experience, vision and competencies to enhance its security posture while maintaining a vibrant Christ-centered culture. The school has invested campus-wide and seeks to do more. Current security features include an iron security fence on the north perimeter with automated gates, security cameras throughout the campus, access control on exterior doors, after-hours security presence, a Campus Protection Agent, and a School Resource Officer (SRO) on campus when school is in session. The relationship with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is strong.

The individual must be exceptionally skilled, able to lead people, think critically, and anticipate threats internally and externally. Strong situational awareness is essential. The role requires understanding the private school environment and balancing a strong program with a thriving high school culture.

The Director of Safety & Security will work closely with the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, the Chief of Parent and Student Affairs, the Dean’s office, and the SRO. The role includes assembling and leading the Safety & Security Leadership Team and the Safety & Security Committee, serving on the Threat Assessment Team, Crisis Management Team and acting as the school’s Incident Commander.

You are expected to integrate your faith into daily work and maintain a relentless commitment to keeping the Valor Christian community safe. Understanding the difference between law enforcement and proactive campus safety is key. Ongoing learning in this field is important to keeping the program among the best in the nation.

Primary Responsibilities

Oversee all safety and security programs, protocols and initiatives, and develop plans for continual improvement

Serve as primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire, emergency managers and first responders

Coordinate and manage all emergency preparedness plans (fire drills, lockdown procedures, crisis response)

Work with the SRO and after-hours security provider to ensure correct protocols are followed

Oversee Campus and Building security systems, alarm monitoring and protocols

Manage Campus Protection Agent(s)

Lead policy development related to campus safety, student supervision and security operations

Annually lead internal safety assessments and facilitate an external audit every 3–5 years

Lead Safety & Security Leadership Team and Committee; serve on Crisis Management team and as Incident Commander

Develop an annual calendar of drills, training, and assessments for all community members

Ensure technology supports safety needs (visitor management, cameras, access control, license plate recognition)

Additional Responsibilities

Oversee risk profiles for school activities and events (after-school functions, trips, international experiences)

Lead or participate in investigations involving students, staff and faculty as needed

Regularly review and update safety policies and emergency plans

Engage with local security professionals to share best practices

Develop plans for internal active shooter response team formation

Collaborate with leadership to integrate safety into daily operations and culture

Promote a proactive, compassionate security approach reflecting Christian principles

Collaboration and Communication with the School Leadership Team

Define, cultivate and lead the Christian community, affirming the community’s distinctive beliefs

Maintain visibility by attending major events and using co-curricular events to build relationships

Collaborate with Cabinet leaders across departments on critical issues

Oversee and direct the department budget with stewardship of Valor’s resources

Engage with Safety & Security team to close knowledge gaps and foster trust

Seek counsel with Cabinet Leaders and report regularly to the Leadership team

Periodically engage with the board to discuss strategic planning and safety work

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field

Law enforcement or emergency management experience required

Knowledge of emergency protocols, threat assessment, and campus security operations

Firearms trainings and certifications

Calm under pressure; able to respond confidently during emergencies

Strong leadership and presence; commands respect while remaining approachable

Strong integrity and moral character

Strong work ethic with organizational skills to review and implement security procedures

Builds positive relationships and communicates clearly with all stakeholders

CPR and First Aid required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands are as described for all employees; may lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements and reasonable accommodations apply as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment includes classroom, office and outdoor events with variable noise levels.
