Pre-Apprentice Generation Specialist Job Description: Idaho Power — located in Hagerman, Idaho — is looking for a temporary Pre-Apprentice Generation Specialist to join our Hagerman plant maintenance crew. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on. What does a Pre-Apprentice Generation Specialist do for us? This is a training position, designed to prepare future Generation Specialists for work in a team-based environment. These individuals will learn how to operate and maintain a hydro plant and associated equipment. Under direct supervision, they will perform the following:

Assist Generation Specialists in performing the necessary operating and maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the area, plant, and facilities

Complete assigned tasks, including preventive and corrective maintenance on the power facilities, buildings, hatcheries, roads, parks, and other associated equipment as well as completing necessary upgrades

Demonstrate the aptitude to be promoted to an Apprentice Generation Specialist position

Aptitude will be demonstrated through on-the-job evaluations, a skills assessment and performance evaluations

If aptitude is not sufficiently demonstrated, termination of employment will occur

Pre-Apprentices will be eligible to bid full-time, regular Apprentice Generation Specialist positions as they become available. If unsuccessful in obtaining an Apprentice position within 24 months of hire, they will be released from employment.

Candidate Profile

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE Knowledge of:

Basic electrical theory and the function, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of complex equipment through use of drawings and instructional manuals

Basic math including geometry, trigonometry, and algebra

Skills in:

Operation and/or maintenance of power plants

Inspection and maintenance of heavy equipment

Basic welding and fabrication

Operation of computer systems, software, and programs

Ability to:

Maintain a high level of productivity

Work with a high degree of accountability

Demonstrate good judgement and initiative in resolving work problems

Perform heavy manual labor in adverse conditions

Communicate effectively

Establish positive working relationships in a team-based environment

Resolve conflict

Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours

Perform other duties/tasks as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED Preferred: Associates degree or vocational certification in related area Experience: 1 year of demonstrated experience in mechanical, maintenance, or construction field with at least 6 months of direct experience in electrical, generation, power plants, mechanical, hydraulic, or welding that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities OR An equivalent combination of education, work experience, or military training Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position A valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire

Physical and Additional Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job will require occasional, physically strenuous work for long periods of time and in adverse conditions. The job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, climb into and out of vehicles, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and climb multiple flights of stairs. Occasionally lifting items weighing 75 lbs. shoulder height and above; occasionally lifting items weighing up to 100 lbs. waist high and knee high. Occasionally using exertional force up to 50 lbs. to push/pull cable, etc.; occasionally carrying items weighing up to 100 lbs. with two hands and occasionally carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs. with one hand. Requires the ability to operate a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and testing equipment and use fine motor skills to use a computer keyboard, test equipment, and replace parts. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation, the DOT medical certificate exam. Job requires the employee to obtain and wear approved safety footwear and FR clothing. Requires working from heights to operate and perform work from elevated positions up to 300 feet which may include work from ladders, elevated platforms, or open hatches/holes/cavities and the ability to work from confined spaces. Must be willing to perform work in inclement weather, extreme heat, and/or cold conditions. Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. Internal, regular employees who are successful candidates will be placed as regular employees in a Temporary Duty Assignment job classification. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
