Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION : Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work. Responsible for the overall maintenance of the trail system as well as the park grounds, facilities, livestock, vehicles and equipment for Barton Warnock State Park. Provides visitor services, interpretive/guide programs, tours, revenue collection and public relations. Performs all phases of maintenance to include: facility and grounds repairs, equipment, fences, water lines, windmills, mowing, plumbing, electrical, daily janitorial cleaning of restrooms/lodging facilities and laundry operations. Operates all types of equipment including hand and power tools, chainsaws, mowers, tractors and other heavy equipment. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures. NOTE : This position is located in a very remote and rugged portion of the state. It is recommended that applicants review or research the location prior to applying.

Responsibilities

Perform complex building maintenance and construction tasks at Barton Warnock State Park.

Maintain trail systems, park grounds, facilities, livestock, vehicles and equipment.

Provide visitor services, interpretive/guide programs, tours and public relations.

Handle revenue collection and daily janitorial duties for restrooms, lodging facilities and laundry operations.

Operate hand/power tools, chainsaws, mowers, tractors and other heavy equipment; perform facility and grounds repairs (plumbing, electrical, etc.).

Work under general supervision with some latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Adhere to all agency, division and branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience : Three years of facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

Licensure : Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license within 30 days of employment.

Acceptable Substitutions

Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of general office work experience in computers, daily and monthly reports and customer service.

Experience working with the general public and volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of general office procedures; basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks; and interpretation/education programs.

Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management and conservation principles; building and facility repair techniques; volunteer program oversight and management.

Knowledge of general maintenance techniques and basic mathematics.

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook; effective verbal and written communication.

Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment; standard office equipment.

Skill in providing quality customer service and establishing/maintaining effective work relationships; managing multiple priorities; making independent, sound, timely decisions.

Ability to work effectively with the public and co-workers; prioritize operations at multiple sites; plan, assign or supervise the work of volunteers; work as part of a team; work independently with little or no supervision.

Ability to accurately handle cash and account for revenue; perform manual labor including lifting up to 50 lbs; conduct activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

Working Conditions

Required to work 40 hours per week, including various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations; perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

May operate a State vehicle and travel up to 10% with possible overnight stays.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures; non-smoking environment in state buildings and vehicles.
