Overview
The Director of Faculty Development provides strategic leadership for all faculty development activities and operational oversight for the Office of Faculty within the BYU School of Medicine (BYU Med). This role ensures that faculty and all individuals who teach or assess medical students are prepared, supported, and continually developed in alignment with school objectives and accreditation standards. The Director of Faculty Development will work to strengthen Christlike attributes among faculty by designing development programs that integrate faith, character, and professional practice. This role fosters environments where attributes exemplified by Jesus Christ, such as integrity, humility, compassion, service, accountability, and love for others, are modeled, taught, and reinforced through mentoring, leadership training, reflective practice, and community engagement. The director reports to the Associate Dean of Faculty, supervises all staff within the Office of Faculty, and collaborates with other deans, department chairs, course and clerkship directors, and central curriculum and evaluation offices. Together, they build and sustain a culture of excellence in teaching, mentoring, leadership, and scholarship aligned with the mission of the BYU School of Medicine. In managing the operations of the Office of Faculty, the Director designs procedures, oversees the processing of all faculty appointments and promotions across the school, and monitors and assesses progress toward strategic and operational objectives to drive ongoing improvement. The Director is entrusted with comprehensive oversight of faculty development programming and will ensure that systems for monitoring, evaluating, and facilitating faculty development, appointments, and promotions are efficient, accurate, and aligned with the school’s mission and goals. Leadership & Strategy for Faculty Development
Develop and execute a School of Medicine–wide Faculty Development Plan aligned with the mission and strategic plan of the medical school, including assessment of faculty needs across basic science and clinical departments Collaborate with department chairs and deans to identify and address school and department-level needs and opportunities related to research, global health, and curricular initiatives. Define, track, and report key performance indicators to support continuous improvement and provide regular updates and recommendations to senior leaders. Design, Delivery, & Evaluation of Comprehensive Faculty Development Programs
Develop programs, tools, and processes (peer review, coaching, data dashboards) that help faculty improve based on evaluations, clerkship metrics, and student outcomes and integrate values of faith, character, and Christlike leadership. Lead a portfolio of workshops, certificate programs, teaching academies, seminars, and online modules addressing: Evidence-based instructional methods; clinical teaching and bedside education; student assessment literacy; curriculum design and evaluation; leadership development; scholarly productivity in medical education; and global health. Collaborate closely with the clinical affiliate partners and residency program directors to ensure all residents, fellows, and other non-faculty instructors are trained in: Learning objectives for medical students; teaching and supervision expectations; assessment methods and feedback; and creating safe, supportive learning environments. Ensure consistent documentation of participation for LCME compliance. Faculty Appointment, Engagement, Advancement, Promotion, and Culture
Promote a mission-aligned, inclusive culture that values continuous improvement, excellence in teaching, and engagement in educational scholarship. Recognize faculty contributions to teaching, mentoring, and citizenship. Work with the Associate Dean of Faculty and promotion committees to ensure faculty have resources and development opportunities related to academic advancement. Coach faculty on promotion pathways, portfolio development, and BYU Med standards of Scholarship. Partner with Department Chairs to identify faculty ready for leadership or advancement and support their preparation. Oversee the process and maintenance of records of faculty appointments, participation, outcomes, and compliance documentation. Support faculty onboarding. Operational Oversight
Oversee day-to-day operations of the Office of Faculty, including budgeting, staffing, and other resource allocation. Oversee compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements. Assist the Associate Dean of Faculty with LCME documentation, the DCI, and survey preparation. Facilitate effective communication within the Office of Faculty and with other units across the School of Medicine. Coordinate technology and administrative support for faculty development programs and services. Conduct regular reviews of operational processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Generate annual reports summarizing participation, impact, and strategic progress. Maintain comprehensive records of faculty development offerings, attendance, outcomes, and continuous quality improvement processes. May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including participation in teaching, scholarship, curriculum review, committee service, and other institutional initiatives. Required Degree:
EdD, PhD, MD, DO or equivalent degree in education or closely related field. Experience: At least 2 years' experience in medical education, faculty development, curriculum design, assessment, or academic leadership. Documented excellence in teaching and experience supporting faculty development initiatives. Experience working collaboratively with academic departments and institutional leaders. Demonstrated success in mentoring faculty in teaching, leadership, or educational scholarship. Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Expertise in evidence-based teaching, assessment, and program evaluation. Ability to lead through collaboration and influence across departments. Excellent communication, facilitation, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Preferred: Strong working knowledge of LCME Standards 4 and 9.1. Preferred: Experience in implementation, application, or community-based research. Preferred: Experience as a course director, clerkship director, or residency program faculty. Preferred: Record of educational scholarship (publications, presentations, grants). Preferred: Experience with faculty coaching, mediation, or leadership development. Preferred: Experience with LCME self-study or accreditation processes. This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.
