Description Step into a leadership role as the curator of a magical summer, where thoughtful preparation and gentle guidance can turn a daily schedule into a seamless journey for the campers and staff. The Seasonal Camp Lead is the anchor of the camp experience, serving as a vital link between the program’s vision and its daily execution. The Camp Lead is responsible for the high-level coordination of the camp plan, ensuring that every activity is meticulously prepped and that counselors have the supplies and support they need to succeed. The Camp Lead provides on-site leadership and support, actively assisting with daily operations to ensure counselors have the bandwidth and confidence to manage their groups through the daily and weekly schedules. The Camp Lead also serves as the primary liaison between parents, counselors and management to maintain a strong connection and flow of information. By providing organizational clarity and professional leadership, the Camp Lead supports a team of counselors to provide amazing camp experiences for all participants.

Essential Job Functions Work activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are not limited to, any or all the following depending on area of assignment, operational necessity, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:

Coordinate and implement the overall camp plan, ensuring the daily schedule is followed and the program’s vision is brought to life each day.

Oversee activity setup and supply management, ensuring all materials are prepped, organized and ready for counselors as soon as possible to minimize downtime.

Anticipate logistical needs by reviewing the schedule in advance, ensuring transitions between activities are smooth and that every group has what it needs to succeed.

Act as an operational anchor for counselors, assisting with day-to-day operations and providing an extra layer of leadership when navigating complex group dynamics.

Mentor the counselor team by offering real-time guidance, ensuring counselors feel confident, supported and empowered to focus on their campers.

Step in as needed to help manage high-energy moments or transitions, providing a steady presence that helps the team maintain a positive environment.

Serve as the primary liaison between parents and the camp, keeping parents aware of upcoming camp activities, handling check in/out, answering questions, notifying of any injuries, behavioral issues or any other concerns, and providing reassurance that campers are in good hands.

Facilitate communication between management and staff, translating leadership goals into daily tasks and relaying feedback to ensure the program stays aligned.

Manage and maintain all documentation and safety reporting, ensuring that all camp policies and procedures are being followed.

Conduct multi-group camp activities, assigning counselors to appropriate roles during activities providing clear instruction and a shared division of tasks.

Develop and coordinate daily and weekly counselor set up and clean up assignments to maintain a clean and safe space for everyone.

Provide basic first aid in cases of minor injury as needed, carefully document all injuries and health incidents and promptly notify parents with accurate and timely information.

Work with the Recreation Coordinator to develop and enforce “behavior improvement plans” for campers whose behavior warrants contact with parents as needed.

Provide operational coverage and group leadership by stepping into the role of camp counselor when needed to facilitate staff breaks, manage unexpected absences, or ensure required ratios are maintained without disrupting the camper experience.

Associated Functions

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Assist in the planning and development of new recreational programs and activities.

Assist with City of Oak Harbor Parks and Recreation events and represent the City of Oak Harbor Park and Recreation at various community events.

May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program participants or supplies in related program activities.

Knowledge Of:

Age-appropriate behaviors and activities to effectively guide both campers and staff.

How to translate a high-level camp plan into daily execution, including supply management and scheduling.

Emergency procedures, first aid documentation and reporting.

Expectations for professional parental communication and community relations.

Skill in:

Delivering real-time constructive feedback and guidance to counselors to help them grow in their roles.

Problem solving and resolving disputes with facts and a professional demeanor to de-escalate high-energy situations, whether between campers or within the staff team.

Clear and concise written and verbal communication to relay accurate and timely information between management, staff, and parents.

Ability to:

Serve as the standard-bearer for the camp’s culture, demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude for others to follow.

Manage multiple tasks to ensure smooth transitions and prepared activities while dealing with the day-to-day challenges presented.

Foster an inclusive environment recognizing the needs of the individual campers while providing the necessary support to ensure every child feels welcome.

Remain calm and decisive when plans change, such as adjusting for weather, staff absences, or unexpected logistical hurdles.

Look ahead at a week’s schedule to foresee challenges, anticipate needs and prep materials before they are required.

Qualifications & Requirements An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions may be considered.

Minimum age of 18 years.

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience working with children.

Experience planning and leading programs in a paid or volunteer role.

City-provided training to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification before the first day of camp.

Must be available from 8am-6pm Monday through Friday.

Lead Camp Counselor is expected to be available to work the summer months with Camp running from the middle of June until the end of August.

Complete a comprehensive background screening to include credit check, to be bonded for cash-handling and Washington Child and Adult Abuse background, prior to hire.

Valid state driver’s license and ability to provide a driver’s abstract showing a good driving record.

Must obtain and maintain a Washington State Department of Health (DOH) Food Worker Card, before the first day of camp, any related expense to obtain the card is covered by the City.

Preferred Qualifications

Work in organizing programs, classes or event planning and coordinating volunteers.

Working Environment & Physical Demands The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those occurring in the performance of the essential functions of this job. Work is performed outdoors at City of Oak Harbor parks and facilities. Activity such as traversing and assisting clients may be required as may travel to other locations for recreational programming. Requires ability to sit, walk or stand, to remain stationary and move for extended periods of time, ability to move and lift items with assistance up to thirty (30) pounds. Work requires the ability to communicate information and ideas, ability to observe details at a close range, and normal visual and hearing acuity. May require strenuous physical activity.
