Job Summary

The City of Overland Park welcomes a full‑time Marketing Communications Specialist to serve in the Communications Division within the City Manager’s Office. The role plans, develops, produces, and publishes internal and external communications for the Parks and Recreation Department, including marketing, advertising, website content, social media, newsletters, and community engagement initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and implement strategic marketing plans for Parks and Recreation facilities, services, programs, events, and rental spaces.

Create and execute external communications across social media, e‑newsletters, print newsletters, website content, news releases, photos, video, and other promotional materials.

Produce internal communications such as newsletters, surveys, videos, memos, and intranet content; promote City policies, activities, and employee recognition.

Plan and execute communications strategies for special events, including festivals, groundbreakings, grand openings, fundraising events, employee participation campaigns, and joint City/community events; staff and attend events as needed.

Secure and design paid advertising across digital and print channels, ensuring alignment with departmental goals, brand standards, and the approved annual advertising budget.

Evaluate the performance of marketing and communications efforts, adjust strategies to maximize effectiveness and fiscal responsibility.

Write and submit grant applications to secure additional funding for Parks and Recreation marketing.

Update local event calendars with upcoming Overland Park Parks and Recreation programs and events.

Assist Parks and Recreation staff in creating program flyers, brochures, promotional items, banners, signage, and other print marketing materials; review all content for accuracy, grammar, spelling, style, and brand adherence.

Maintain information files, brochures, and other printed documents as resources for the community and residents.

Participate in community groups (business, civic, and service) and professional organizations focused on parks, recreation, and communications to foster good relations.

Build and maintain open relationships with media outlets to further the Department’s image.

Provide operational support at Parks and Recreation Department meetings and assist with related coordination.

Respond to requests and inquiries from City staff, the general public, and other stakeholders; provide tours of City facilities and systems when appropriate.

Perform other communication duties as assigned by Communications Division leadership in consultation with Parks and Recreation leadership.

Work Requirements

Work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities.

Maintain availability to communicate with colleagues, supervisors, customers, vendors, and any other stakeholders required for effective job performance.
