Assistant Special Education Director
Position Summary
The Assistant Special Education Director plays a critical leadership role in supporting the implementation and oversight of comprehensive special education services for students across the Sanford School Department. Working in close collaboration with the Special Education Director, this position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, supports effective programming, and promotes inclusive practices that enable all students to achieve their full potential.
Responsibilities Program Administration and Oversight
Assist the Special Education Director in planning, implementing, and evaluating special education programs and services across all school levels.
Monitor compliance with federal laws (IDEA, Section 504, ADA) and Maine Department of Education regulations.
Support the development and implementation of district-wide special education policies and procedures.
Coordinate services for students with disabilities, including evaluation processes, IEP development, and program placement.
Leadership and Supervision
Provide oversight and support to special education staff, including case managers, specialists, and educational technicians.
Conduct staff evaluations and support professional development for special education personnel in collaboration with building administration.
Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between general education and special education staff.
Lead or participate in building-level special education teams and district committees.
Compliance and Data Management
Ensure timely completion of all required paperwork, including IEPs, evaluation reports, and progress monitoring.
Maintain accurate student records and data systems in accordance with state and federal requirements.
Prepare reports and documentation for the Maine Department of Education and federal monitoring.
Oversee Child Find activities and coordinate special education referral processes.
Family and Community Engagement
Serve as a liaison between families, school personnel, and community agencies.
Facilitate resolution of parent concerns and participate in mediation or due process proceedings as needed.
Collaborate with outside agencies to coordinate services and supports for students and families.
Represent the district at community meetings and interagency collaborative efforts.
Budget and Resource Management
Assist in the development and monitoring of the special education budget.
Support procurement of materials, equipment, and resources necessary for program implementation.
Coordinate grant applications and reporting for special education funding sources.
Other Duties
Participate in district leadership team meetings and professional development.
Remain current on best practices in special education and educational leadership.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director or Superintendent.
Qualifications Required:
Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field.
Valid Maine certification as Assistant Special Education Director (#035) or eligibility for such certification.
Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in special education.
Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience with IEP development, case management, and compliance monitoring.
Proficiency with student information systems and assistive technology.
Preferred:
Previous administrative or leadership experience in special education.
Experience working in a PK-12 public school setting.
Knowledge of Maine's special education regulations and reporting requirements.
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or other languages spoken in the community).
Experience with restorative practices, MTSS, and inclusive education models.

Terms of Employment Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and qualifications, according to the Sanford School Department's Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a 12-month position with benefits including health insurance, retirement, and paid leave.
