Location: Lakewood, CO Salary Range: $65,000 - $69,000 per year

The Learning Experience Designer (LXD) serves as an architect of learning, combining design principles, educational theory, and innovative technologies to create engaging, effective, and inclusive learning experiences. LXDs design, develop, and evaluate courses and programs that align with institutional standards, accreditation requirements, and diverse learner needs. Working collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts (SMEs), and multimedia specialists, LXDs ensure all learning experiences are aligned with course and institutional outcomes, pedagogically sound, accessible, and learner-centered.

Key Responsibilities Analysis & Needs Assessment

Partner with faculty, SMEs, and program leaders to assess learning needs, performance gaps, and audience characteristics.

Analyze learner data and feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.

Translate institutional goals, accreditation standards, and business outcomes into actionable design strategies.

Course & Program Design

Apply evidence-based frameworks such as backward design and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Map learning objectives to content, activities, and assessments to ensure alignment.

Develop design documents, prototypes, storyboards, and course maps.

Design multimodal solutions including online, hybrid, classroom, simulations, and case-based learning.

Content Development & Multimedia Integration

Create and adapt instructional materials, assessments, and learning activities.

Collaborate with multimedia specialists to integrate video, animations, graphics, and interactive elements.

Incorporate innovative strategies such as gamification, simulations, and collaborative tools.

Use eLearning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adobe Captivate) to build course content.

Build and test courses within the Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring functionality and usability.

Recommend and integrate third-party tools and emerging technologies to enhance engagement.

Troubleshoot course navigation, assessments, and technical performance prior to launch.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

Apply institutional quality standards (e.g., Quality Matters, OSCQR, RMCAD Online Standards).

Conduct accessibility reviews and ensure compliance with ADA, WCAG, and Section 508.

Verify copyright compliance, intellectual property usage, and adherence to fair use/Creative Commons licensing.

Evaluate courses using data, feedback, and analytics to inform continuous improvement.

Collaboration & Faculty Support

Facilitate design meetings and provide training to faculty and SMEs on instructional best practices.

Serve as a design partner and consultant, guiding SMEs through the development process.

Collaborate with academic leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with program outcomes.

Course Maintenance & Iterative Design

Monitor course performance and make recommendations for updates and revisions.

Conduct scheduled course reviews to ensure content accuracy, accessibility, and pedagogical soundness.

Incorporate learner and faculty feedback to improve learning experiences.

Instructional Design & Pedagogy

Strong foundation in instructional design theory, curriculum mapping, adult learning principles, and inclusive pedagogy.

Expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and user experience (UX) principles.

Technical Proficiency

Proficiency with eLearning authoring tools (Articulate Storyline, Rise, Captivate, etc.).

Experience with LMS platforms (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L, Brightspace).

Familiarity with graphic design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and multimedia production software (Premiere Pro, Camtasia, After Effects, Vyond).

Knowledge of accessibility standards and mobile-first learning design.

Analytical & Problem-Solving

Ability to analyze learner feedback, performance data, and ROI to inform design.

Skilled in identifying gaps and developing innovative, scalable solutions.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clarity in instructional writing.

Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, SMEs, and cross-functional teams.

Project Management

Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and priorities.

Skilled in workflow management, scope balancing, and resource coordination.

Cultural Competence

Commitment to designing inclusive, learner-centered experiences.

Awareness of diverse learner needs and cultural considerations in course design.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant instructional design experience or Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Learning Sciences, Educational Technology, or related field strongly preferred with 2 + years of experience.

3+ years of demonstrated design experience in online and hybrid learning environments.

Experience as a primary instructor in higher education is a plus.

Demonstrated ability to work with faculty across disciplines to emphasize collaboration in Higher Ed.

Demonstrated experience with at least two LMS platforms.

Experience developing multimedia-rich content, including video-based learning and ADA-compliant resources.

Portfolio of instructional design work required.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands The work environment is a typical office environment which may include moderate noise, some evening or weekend hours, confined workspaces, fast work pace with unscheduled interruptions, the need to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and extensive time sitting and working with computers. Occasional overnight travel required.
