General Description
The main responsibilities of this position are to diagnosis and document vehicle and equipment problems, and to coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs activities between the Central Vehicle Maintenance Facility (CVMF) and user departments. The incumbent makes the initial diagnosis of equipment problems, prepares and processes work orders, schedules preventative maintenance and repairs, acts as a liaison between the CVMF and user departments, and assists in the maintenance of the computerized fleet information management system. Fleet Service Writers exercise some independent judgement in solving work problems, and receive general supervision from a manager. The position may direct the work of a clerical staff as assigned. Performs related work as required.
This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.
A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. Typical Work Activities
Diagnoses vehicle problems by inspection, operator interview, test driving, and reviewing past vehicle history and warranty data; Prepares work orders for vehicle and equipment repair and warranty work; Prepares preventative maintenance schedules according to vehicle and staffing availability; Notifies customers via written and oral communications when vehicles are ready for pickup, and when preventative maintenance and motor vehicle inspections are past due; Arranges work with outside vendors and maintains records of these services; Dispatches road service trucks; Performs tasks associated with vehicle commissioning and disposal processes; Assists in the maintenance of the fleet management information system; monitors and analyzes data; updates fleet repair and inventory records; monitors historical records on vehicles and equipment; Researches information and prepares performance reports; Maintains parking facilities as to organization and vehicle identification; Plans and schedules work in the absence of the supervisor; May transport vehicles to vendor and other locations.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
PLUS
Two (2) years experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered light and heavy motor equipment.
OR Four (4) years experience writing repair or service orders for an automotive repair shop licensed by New York State. SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver's license at the time of appointment. Possession of a valid New York State Class B Commercial driver's license within 6 months of appointment. Incumbents must maintain this license throughout their employment.
