We are seeking a Technical Designer III to join our Chicago Studio. A Technical Designer III plays a pivotal role in the realization of architectural projects from ideation to completion. This position requires a high level of technical expertise, design proficiency, and collaboration with cross‑functional teams. The Technical Designer III is responsible for translating conceptual designs into detailed documents, ensuring precision, functionality, and compliance with relevant building codes and regulations. This position is required to be in the office 2‑3 days per week so we are looking for candidates who a) are in the greater Chicago area b) authorized to work in the US without sponsorship and c) not through a third party.
Primary Responsibilities
Concept to Construction Documentation:
Collaborate with architects and team leads to translate design concepts into comprehensive and detailed construction documents.
Develop and refine design ideas through the iterative process, considering both aesthetic and technical aspects.
Technical Expertise:
Possess an in‑depth understanding of construction methods, materials, and building systems.
Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in architectural design and construction.
Code Compliance:
Ensure that all designs and construction documents comply with local, state, and federal building codes and regulations.
Collaborate with regulatory authorities to address and resolve code‑related issues.
Coordination and Collaboration:
Work closely with architects, engineers, and other team members to integrate various design disciplines into cohesive and constructible solutions.
Facilitate coordination meetings and communicate effectively to resolve design conflicts.
Quality Control:
Conduct thorough reviews of construction documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design intent.
Implement quality control procedures to maintain the firm's standards.
Technology Integration:
Utilize the latest design and drafting software to enhance efficiency and precision in the production of construction documents.
Train and mentor less experienced technical designers on software tools and best practices.
Construction Administration Support:
Provide support during the construction phase, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) and reviewing submittals to ensure compliance with design intent.
Required Education And Experience
Accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture required.
6‑8+ years of professional experience specifically with:
Space planning and outline specification creation
Concept development and design presentation
Understanding of code requirements, and basic knowledge of architectural elements such as doors/frames/hardware, and architectural lighting
Construction documentation – including specifications, construction plans, partition types, elevations, and millwork details
Construction administration – including field administration, submittals, and RFIs
Registered Architect/working towards licensure preferred.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Software Proficiency:
AutoCad / Revit or other BIM software, Vectorworks preferred, but not required
SketchUp or other 3D modeling software, Vectorworks preferred, but not required
Adobe Creative Suite – InDesign and Photoshop
Microsoft Office Suite – Excel and Word
Google Sheets and Docs
Detail‑oriented with a focus on accuracy.
Able to work independently and as part of a team.
