Overview A licensed funeral director and embalmer has special training and licensing in funeral service. Every state has different requirements to become a licensed funeral director, however most require completion of a degree through an accredited Mortuary School along with a supervised apprenticeship. A licensed funeral director is responsible for meeting with families following a death, filing legal paperwork for the death certificate, burial permit, and cremation permit. Planning and directing funerals, memorial services, celebrations of life, visitation, receptions, burials and cremations. Funeral directors are also responsible for ensuring the funeral home is available 24 hours a day to respond to hospitals, nursing homes, hospice centers, and family residences after a death has occurred. Funeral directors also complete the embalming process and ensure the deceased is properly prepared for a viewing by dressing, casketing, completing cosmetic work and hair dressing. In some areas, the local funeral director is also the acting coroner.
