Educational and Experience Requirement Bachelor's degree in a related field is required prior to start date. A master's degree and at least one year of experience working in the field of Residence Life are helpful. Proven management and leadership abilities, strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills are essential.

Must be willing to live on campus in a residence hall and work a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education.

Nature and Purpose of Position The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is a full‑time live‑in position in a university residence hall, focused on community engagement and student development. The RHD supervises and supports a student staff team made up of Resident Advisors. Key responsibilities include building management, efficient administration, supervision, community engagement, crisis management, and student success. This position reports directly to an Assistant Director of Residence Life.

Primary Responsibilities

Staff supervision and development

– Provides direct supervision to a team of 6‑16 student staff members; leads weekly staff meetings and professional development; conducts regular 1‑1s and end‑of‑semester evaluations; utilizes accountability systems; participates in recruitment, selection, training, and development of student staff each semester.

Student success and community engagement

– Oversees daily residence hall operations to support community development and well‑being; maintains daily student contact and face‑to‑face availability; manages implementation of residential curriculum; ensures a safe and healthy environment.

Building management and administration

– Holds scheduled office hours Monday‑Friday 8‑5 pm; processes paperwork timely; oversees room occupancy and resident change requests; coordinates hall openings/closings; collaborates with facilities and custodial teams; manages monthly health and safety inspections and follow‑up.

Crisis management

– Participates in 24‑hour on‑call duty rotation; leads on‑call crisis and emergency response; engages with students in crisis; ensures accurate reporting; implements emergency drills and required paperwork; enforces policy and reporting in StarRez.

Divisional and Departmental Responsibilities Maintains full communication with the Department of Residence Life staff; fulfills secondary collateral assignments; completes professional development and training opportunities; serves as liaison with other Student Affairs departments; cultivates relationships across departments; supports larger university initiatives such as Saturday@Sam, Orientation, Bearkat Kickoff; performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications Must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends. Must possess a valid Texas driver's license at time of employment. Able to physically perform the essential duties, including walking upstairs, frequent campus travel, daily face‑to‑face service, and use of a department cell phone and computer. Position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). No set working hours; average weekly hours equal full‑time equivalency.
