Under supervision, has charge of the organization and direction of recreational activities of a playground or play center. Performs related duties as required. Typical tasks include organizing and directing play and planned activities at a playground or play center. Organizes activities and gives instruction in group games, such as playground ball, volley ball, tennis, and other group or team games. Organizes and conducts field meets, sport days, and other special and festival events on the playground in connection with city-wide programs. Marks and lays out playing fields for various games and events. Supervises the issuance, setting-out, use, collection, storing, and maintaining of equipment and apparatus. Maintains order within the playground or center. Discourages gambling, profanity, and rowdiness on the playground. Encourages participation in recreation activities. Conducts special classes or assists staff instructors in handicrafts, dancing, story-telling, dramatics, music, nature study, and other special activities. Attends staff meetings. Administers first aid. Consults with supervisors, assistants, and co-workers concerning the work of the playground. Keeps records. Makes routine and special reports. Supervises the work of play leaders or other assistants. Minimum qualifications include a valid State of Ohio ID, high school diploma or equivalent (early childhood education or recreation training preferred), experience working with children in a playground, school, or recreational setting, strong communication and leadership skills, ability to manage groups of children calmly and effectively, knowledge of child development and safe play practices, patience, creativity, and enthusiasm for working with children, and first aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain). The Play Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising safe, engaging, and inclusive play activities at the playground. The role focuses on promoting physical activity, creativity, social skills, and positive behavior among children while ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Additional duties/responsibilities include planning, organizing, and leading age-appropriate play activities, games, and recreational programs; supervising children during playground activities to ensure safety and well-being; encouraging inclusive play, teamwork, and positive social interaction; monitoring playground equipment and reporting safety hazards or maintenance needs; enforcing playground rules and guidelines in a fair and positive manner; supporting children in conflict resolution and emotional regulation during play; collaborating with teachers, caregivers, or staff to align activities with developmental goals; maintaining attendance records and basic activity reports as required; and providing first aid or emergency response when necessary, following safety protocols. The work environment includes an outdoor playground setting with varying weather conditions, a physically active role requiring standing, walking, and occasional lifting, and requires constant attention and supervision for child safety.
