The County Extension Director is a member of the faculty of North Carolina State University. The major responsibility of the job is to provide leadership for and coordinate the efforts of the county Extension staff in developing an effective total County Extension educational program. The role requires a dynamic individual to provide visionary leadership for a comprehensive Extension program to meet the needs of the entire county population. The Director serves as the County Extension administrative leader with responsibilities for administration, public policy issues, and community/leadership development. The Director maintains an effective advisory leadership system representative of all program areas, provides leadership and expertise in coordinating/securing resource development for all program areas, and is responsible for marketing Extension programs and impacts.
The County Extension Director must maintain a strong, collaborative relationship in assisting the staff in delivering educational programs with county government input and support. The Director must network and collaborate with agencies and organizations, county departments, schools, town officials, area agencies, and University and Extension personnel. The position will be responsible for coordinating staff development, training and maintaining the affirmative action plan of North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The individual must demonstrate the ability to plan, organize, and work well with people.
Responsibilities
Organize and allocate resources for the Extension program
Market the Extension program and its impacts
Prepare budgets and maintain administrative relationships
Interpret and communicate policy to staff and the public
Teach, evaluate, and report in the assigned county
Coordinate staff development, training, performance evaluations, and align staff work responsibilities
Assign programming responsibility for subject matter areas
Travel within the district and occasional travel outside the district
Supervisory Number of employees supervised: 6 Time spent supervising: 75%–85%
Requirements and Preferences Minimum Experience/Education The minimum requirements for the County Extension Director are either:
A Master’s degree in Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, public administration or a related field plus a minimum of 3 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience in a university or community outreach organization or program.
A Bachelor’s degree in the same fields plus a minimum of 10 years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience.
Candidates applying with a Bachelor’s degree and less than 10 years of experience must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program and obtain the degree within one year of hire. Administrative and supervisory experience, including human resource development, fiscal resource management, and external relations, is strongly preferred. Department Required Skills

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM Business Hours, with evenings and weekends as required.
Recruitment Details Anticipated hiring range: Minimum $50,000 commensurate with education and experience.
