Position Overview NC State Extension extends research-based knowledge to all North Carolinians, helping them transform science into everyday solutions that improve their lives and grow our state. The County Extension Director is a member of the faculty of North Carolina State University and leads and coordinates county Extension staff to develop an effective total County Extension educational program. Responsibilities include administration, public policy issues, community/leadership development, marketing Extension programs, resource development, staff training, budgeting, and maintaining an effective advisory leadership system.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit North Carolina Cooperative Extension provides residents access to NC State University and NC A&T State University resources and expertise. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Other Work / Responsibilities Responsibilities include organizing and allocating resources, marketing the Extension program, preparing budgets, maintaining administrative relationships, interpreting and communicating policy, teaching, evaluating, and reporting. The County Extension Director must maintain collaborative relationships with county government agencies, local officials, area agencies, University and Extension personnel, and other partners; coordinate staff development and training; conduct performance evaluations; align staff work responsibilities; and be assigned programming responsibility for subject matter area(s). Travel within the district, and occasional travel outside the district, is required.
Requirements and Preferences Qualifications:
Minimum requirements are either:
A Master’s degree in a field related to Extension, educational programming, administration, organizational leadership, or public administration with at least three (3) years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar work experience; or
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least ten (10) years of service with Cooperative Extension or similar experience.
Administrative and supervisory experience, including human resource development, fiscal resource management, and external relations, is strongly preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and less than ten years of experience must be actively enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program and complete the degree within one year of hire.
