Position Description POSITION SUMMARY: The Director, Strategy and Corporate Initiatives, is responsible for assisting the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) President and Executive Leadership Team in developing, advancing and achieving the organization’s strategic plan as well as helping ensure the alignment of corporate planning activity throughout the organization. In order to effectively carry out these responsibilities, the Director will be responsible for advancing broad consultation processes to ensure that the strategic plan is current, ensure that the Joint Board of Governors (JBG) approves the strategy, track achievements of the strategic plan, ensure effective engagement and communications of the plan, and manage financial allocations to strategic initiatives, under the direction of the President and the Executive Leadership Team.
The Director provides executive-level support and strategic counsel to the President in select areas of their work. The Director works closely with the President on key initiatives, priorities, and special projects of critical importance to the hospital and its St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) partners. While reporting directly to the President, the Director also works closely with the SJHH Vice-Presidents, other members of SJHH senior administration, JBG partner organization leaders, and the staff of the President's Office, in order to advance the priorities of the President. The Director is also responsible for assisting with the development and execution of the St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) strategy, both proactively and as requested. As a result, the Director has significant interaction with the SJHH President, the Joint Board of Governors and leaders within the SJHS.
The Director is also responsible for providing leadership and support for strategic and operational project(s) at SJHH and within the St. Joseph’s Health System. These project(s) may range is scope and complexity but focus on organizational transformation and the establishment of new organizational capabilities. He/she ensures that the strategic objectives and operational plans are carried out to provide efficient and effective delivery of health care services within an academic, research and client/family centered environment.
Finally, he/she provides leadership and direction to management/senior staff within the programs/services to ensure that priorities are addressed and the programs/services goals, in keeping with the vision, values and strategic direction of the organization, are achieved.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Contributes to the corporate efforts and initiatives, as appropriate, to enhance SJHH’s mission, vision and values.
Performs duties in a manner that demonstrates the employee’s commitment to developing a culture of patient and staff safety through accountability, reliability, trust and team work.
Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act, in a timely manner.
Staff are encouraged to participate in activities with other organizations and with the community.
Works directly with the President and senior leadership to ensure that the strategic plan is current and relevant to the objectives of the organization and community.
Develops strategic planning documents (every 3-5 years at the discretion of the executive leadership team) that can be shared with all levels of the organization and community.
Ensures that strategic planning documents, and associated communications, are current by conducting strategic planning refresh exercises (as appropriate and under direction of executive leadership team) and regular consultation with stakeholders.
Ensures that the Joint Board of Governors (JBG) is regularly updated on the progress of the strategic plan as well as partners with leadership from JBG member organizations (St. Joseph’s Homecare and St. Joseph’s Villa) in order to collectively advance shared strategic goals, vision, mission and values.
Ensures alignment of the SJHH strategic plan with the broader goals of the St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) and its partners by participating in SJHS strategic planning sessions as well as coordinating SJHH planning with the SJHS strategy..
Partner with leaders and strategic planners in other SJHS organizations to share resources, collectively troubleshoot shared challenges, and align on strategic directions, where appropriate.
Provides subject matter expertise in the design, development, management and implementation of organization’s strategic plan and priorities.
Ensures that strategic initiatives are appropriately led, scoped, resourced and aligned to achieve the goals of the strategic plan.
Ensures the effective implementation of strategic initiatives by partnering with various internal and external stakeholders, as required, including partners in the SJHS.
Interacts with various program leads to ensure strategy and initiatives meet corporate governance and accreditation requirements.
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to provide business context in the design, development and implementation of strategic initiatives.
Establishes tracking mechanisms for achievement and progress reporting at different levels of the organization.
Provides coaching on complex strategic and business issues and facilitates processes to reach effective resolution.
Acts as a relationship manager on assigned projects/programs and ensures alignment to overall corporate and program goals.
Develops solutions and makes recommendations based on an understanding of the business strategy and stakeholder needs.
Conducts analysis required to inform strategic recommendations and considers the “big picture” in terms of the program and corporate goals.
Breaks down strategic problems, and analyses data and information to provide insights and recommendations.
Provides executive-level support and strategic counsel to the President in topics such as health system transformation and advocacy for broader health system change in policy and provision of care
Provides leadership in the fostering of the mission, vision, values and goals of SJHH consistent with and support those of the St. Joseph’s Health System.
Promotes an environment which supports clinical excellence, continuous learning, outcome evaluation and research.
Facilitates the efficient and cost-effective utilization of resources (human, financial, equipment and facility).
Collaborates with other programs, e.g., Clinical units, University, Research and other programs for mutual problem solving, provincial/Ontario Health initiatives and transformational endeavours.
Fosters strong internal and external networks and works with and across multiple teams to achieve business objectives.
Acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders for making business decisions and implementing strategic initiatives.
Develops an expert understanding of business/group challenges.
Networks with public sector and industry contacts to gather competitive insights and best practices.
Consults to or serves various committees and working groups.
Influences how teams/groups work together.
Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to multiple, interdependent, complex problems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters Degree of Business Administration, Public Administration or equivalent required
10 years experience as a Manager or director experience in a large academic health sciences corporation (or equivalent public sector organization).
10 years experience as a Manager or director of strategic planning function in a large corporate organization.
10 years experience working in management consulting with a reputable firm.
Related experience in progressively senior leadership roles that includes managing strategic and operational projects and facilitating and managing consultation processes with a wide range of stakeholder groups.
Expertise in strategic planning methodology and extensive experience with the strategic planning function of a large corporate organization
Fosters collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
Possesses superior change management and relationship management skills.
Inspires a shared vision and aligns performance goals and objectives for team and individuals to ensure match with strategy while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness.
