Camp is scheduled to start June 8, 2026, and run through August 7, 2026. This position requires the applicant to successfully pass a drug screening. Employees in this position are responsible for implementing a safe and well-rounded summer camp program while directing and supervising Summer Camp staff members and providing a wide variety of activities for campers ranging in age. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed. This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials. Participates in orientation training. Becomes familiar with and implements camp policies, procedures, and philosophy as stated in the Summer Camp Staff Manual and learns the role of the Summer Camp Director. Complies with established policies, procedures, and regulations of the Parks & Recreation Department and the City. Greets the public; answers questions about registered participants from parents; meets parents, legal guardians, and care providers daily or as needed and discusses the camper's week with them. Organizes and sets up programs and activities; gathers materials, supplies, and equipment for use in implementing plans; and supervises recreation activities. Resolves differences that may arise during play. Assists at all camp check-ins and check-outs with assigned roles and responsibilities. Participates in all activities with campers. Encourages and facilitates camper's participation in all activities by implementing appropriate strategies with supervisory staff. Opens and closes the summer camp program, checking the summer camp designated area for any safety issues and reporting any maintenance issues within this area. Maintains the cleanliness of all areas of camp utilized by campers and camp staff. Completes assigned job duties. Stores supplies appropriately after use. Monitors campers' actions and activities to ensure adherence to standard and established safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and operating requirements. Plans and implements activities for the camp participants. May be responsible for purchasing field trip admissions, supplies, and other items necessary for the implementation of summer camp with a City Purchasing Card. Ensures the safe and appropriate conduct of campers; addresses chronic misconduct to prevent injuries to campers, staff, or the public. Supervises, directs, and evaluates all Summer Camp staff members. Reacts quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations. Other duties as may be assigned. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree is required. Minimum of 3 years of experience working with children in a camp or youth recreation program required, with at least 2 years of supervisory experience preferred. Possession of valid driver's license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days from date of hire. Knowledge and understanding of how to lead and/or participate in all aspects of camp activities. Knowledge of behavior-management techniques. Knowledge of safety regulations and emergency procedures. Knowledge of child development process and needs of youth. Knowledge of group management techniques. Knowledge of the limited abilities of youth as it relates to their ability to participate in recreational activities. Knowledge of environmental factors that could have a negative effect on campers, such as bad weather, or water hazards. Ability to coordinate weekly activities for youth. Ability to supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned Summer Camp staff members. Ability to appropriately apply safety regulations to those youth participating in summer day camp. Ability to observe each camper daily and check for cuts, bruises, skin rashes, or other indications of illness or injury. Ability to serve as a positive role model for campers, including attitude, punctuality, treating others with respect, sportsmanship, etc. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and initiate necessary action. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with camp participants, parents of campers, and employees, and the public. Ability to offer guidance in-group and camp wide activities. Ability to work as part of a team to ensure that all campers' needs are met in a fair and appropriate way. Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations. Ability to recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving.
