_*NOTE: Applicants MUST possess a license to practice law through the Michigan State Bar OR qualify for Admission without Examination. *_The Public Defender plays a crucial role in providing legal representation to individuals who cannot afford to hire private counsel. This position requires a commitment to justice and advocacy for clients facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected throughout the legal process. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of various areas of law, including but not limited to immigration, personal injury, and workers' compensation law.
*Duties*
* Represent clients in criminal cases, ensuring fair trial rights are upheld.
* Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as Westlaw to prepare for cases.
* Draft legal documents including motions, briefs, and pleadings.
* Engage in negotiations with prosecutors to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
* Provide guidance on tribal law regulations and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
* Collaborate with other legal professionals within the law office to strategize case approaches.
* Maintain accurate records of case progress and client communications.
* Advocate for clients during hearings and trials, presenting evidence and arguments effectively.
*Qualifications*
* Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
* Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction.
* Strong knowledge of criminal law and procedures.
* Familiarity with immigration law and personal injury law is preferred.
* Proficient in legal research and writing skills; experience with Westlaw is a plus.
* Ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Commitment to serving underrepresented populations and understanding their unique challenges.

Pay: $71,236.00 - $95,463.00 per year
