
UPMC Chautauqua is seeking an experienced and strategic
Director, Pharmacy Services
to lead and advance pharmacy operations across both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role provides oversight of a dedicated team of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians and plays a key leadership role in ensuring safe, effective, and efficient medication‑use practices.
Pharmacy Services operates from 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM, and this position is primarily day shift, with responsibility for leadership, oversight, and coordination across all hours of operation.
This position is eligible for an incentive of up to 7.5%.
Position Summary Plans, organizes, and supervises Pharmacy Services according to the policies, procedures, and philosophy of the System and the standard practice of the profession, in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Operations
Plan, organize, and supervise Pharmacy Services in alignment with System policies, procedures, and philosophy, and standard professional practice within state and federal laws
Organize and direct all activities of Pharmacy Services
Coordinate and integrate pharmacy services within the department and across other hospital departments
Communicate and implement administrative directives for department staff
Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment by recognizing priorities, accommodating department needs, and accepting appropriate authority
Patient Safety, Clinical Quality & Medication‑Use Systems
Conduct ongoing evaluation of service requirements and emerging technical developments to improve patient care and ensure services are provided properly and economically
Establish systems and procedures that promote maximum safety and service associated with medication use
Maintain a patient profile system to monitor drug therapy for safety and efficacy
Perform professional judgment related to medication dispensing, including therapeutic appropriateness, drug interactions, dosage calculations, and overdose prevention
Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care with patients and significant others
Participate in quality improvement activities related to drug utilization and medication effectiveness
Formulary, Regulatory Compliance & Distribution
Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures that guide and support service delivery
Develop the philosophy, objectives, policies, methods, and procedures of the department
Maintain a working Formulary System approved by the medical staff through the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee
Serve as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee
Demonstrate responsibility for hospital cost containment through effective formulary control processes
Ensure medication distribution is performed according to established policies and procedures and in compliance with all state and federal regulations
Communication, Professionalism & Service Excellence
Maintain professional, pleasant, and effective communication internally and externally
Promote the hospital’s image by maintaining a positive, helpful attitude toward employees, physicians, visitors, and the community
Exhibit integrity, courtesy, and respect for others at all times
Present a professional image through appropriate attire and etiquette
Maintain strict confidentiality of hospital and departmental information with no infractions
Aseptic Technique & Safety
Adhere to proper aseptic techniques, procedures, and safety precautions

Promote employee growth through coaching, counseling, and training
Administer personnel policies and procedures related to hiring, orientation, performance evaluation, and discipline in accordance with established guidelines
